Jalen Duren's future with the Detroit Pistons is getting harder to read as the contract standoff moves deeper into September. The Athletic reported that Detroit's latest offer is around $190 million over five years, while Duren wants at least $200 million. With training camp getting closer, the gap is now becoming a bigger part of the story. Duren has also stayed away from some team activities this summer. According to The Athletic, he did not attend the San Diego minicamp organized by Cade Cunningham or the Labor Day gathering at owner Tom Gores' home. That has added another layer to an already tense contract situation.

Jalen Duren And Pistons Still Apart On Contract

The money remains the main issue between Duren and Detroit. The Athletic reported that the Pistons have offered a five-year contract worth about $190 million, while Duren is seeking at least $200 million. He is eligible for a much larger five-year deal, but the two sides have not reached a middle ground.

The difference is not only about the total value. Player and team options can change how much a contract is worth and how much security it gives the player. Duren's camp has made its position clear, while Detroit appears unwilling to move all the way toward his $200 million target.

That leaves the Pistons facing a decision with training camp approaching. Duren can still choose his $9.6 million qualifying offer, which would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. For now, his absence from team events is adding more attention to the unresolved talks.

Jalen Duren's Team Absence Adds More Pressure

Duren's approach is different from last season, when he stayed focused despite not receiving a rookie-scale extension. He spoke about wanting to win and even said he hoped to spend his entire career in Detroit. This summer, his actions have made the situation feel less settled.

The Athletic reported that Duren did not attend the San Diego minicamp during the week of Aug. 23 or the Labor Day team party at Gores' Southern California home. The Athletic also noted that Media Day is roughly two weeks away, making his attendance there another point to watch.

Detroit still has time to find an agreement, but Duren's position gives him a real choice. If he accepts the qualifying offer, he risks leaving significant money on the table now while betting on himself in 2027. If no deal comes soon, that choice could define his future in Detroit.
