But Dawn Staley believes Clark's biggest threat is not her shooting. It is what happens when her passing starts getting teammates involved. That skill has helped make Clark one of the hardest players to defend, both in the WNBA and on the international stage.
The numbers back up that reputation. Clark finished her rookie WNBA season with 769 points, 337 assists and 122 three-pointers, setting rookie records in all three categories, according to the WNBA. In the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup, she entered the knockout stage averaging 7 assists per game for Team USA, showing that playmaking remains a major part of her game.
Caitlin Clark's Passing Makes Her A Dangerous Player
Staley explained the problem clearly after facing Clark during her college coaching career. Speaking on Kylie Kelce's “Not Gonna Lie” podcast, Staley said, “But for me, the most dangerous thing about Caitlin Clark is her passing ability.” She added that Clark can make other players better and raise their production alongside her own.
That creates a tough choice for defenders. Give Clark room and she can shoot from well beyond the three-point line. Pressure her closely and she can drive or find a teammate cutting into open space. Staley said her teams were willing to let Clark score 30 points, but did not want her producing 12 assists because those passes could lift Iowa's entire offense.
Clark has also shown that this is more than a college skill. The WNBA says she set the league's rookie records for assists and three-pointers in 2024, while also becoming the first rookie to record a triple-double. Her ability to score and create at the same time is what sets up the next part of the story: defenders cannot focus on only one threat.
Caitlin Clark's Range And Playmaking Keep Defenses Guessing
The next problem starts several feet behind the three-point line. Clark's shooting range forces defenders to move farther from the basket, which can create space for drives and passes. She also moves without the ball, giving defenses another task once she gives it up instead of simply standing in one spot.
Her college career showed how unusual the combination could become. Clark left Iowa as the NCAA Division I all-time scoring leader with 3,951 points and 548 three-pointers, according to the WNBA. She was then selected No. 1 overall by Indiana in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Now Clark is showing that same playmaking value with Team USA. At the 2026 FIBA World Cup in Berlin, she recorded 11 assists against China and had nine in the quarterfinal win over Hungary. FIBA lists her at 7 assists per game through that stage, ranking third in the tournament. That is why calling Clark dangerous is not only about how many points she scores.
