Sue Bird has watched Apple TV's new UConn documentary, and she thinks three episodes were never going to be enough. The former Huskies star praised The Dynasty: UConn Huskies but pointed out that several major players and eras received limited attention. Bird specifically mentioned Tina Charles, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and others whose impact helped shape UConn women's basketball. Her comments came on the September 11 episode of her Bird's Eye View podcast, where she explained why fitting 40 years of history into three episodes was always going to be difficult.

Sue Bird Says Three Episodes Were Not Enough For UConn's Story

Bird did not hold back while discussing the documentary. She said, “I loved it. I think we can all agree right from the jump — it is so well done. It's a wonderful documentary.” She then raised the biggest issue, adding, “I think we can also agree right from the jump that three episodes is not enough.”

Her concern was not about the quality of the series. Bird understood that the filmmakers had to make hard choices when covering four decades of UConn basketball. She said, “The ways in which certain eras and generations of 40 years of UConn basketball had to kind of be fast-forwarded through doesn't seem fair.” She specifically felt Tina Charles, Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart's eras deserved more space.

Bird also made sure her comments were not taken as criticism of the entire project. “Those two particular eras didn't get a lot of love,” she said. “But that doesn't mean it didn't hit every single theme that all of us experienced.” That point leads into what makes UConn's history so difficult to capture in one short documentary.

Apple TV's UConn Documentary Covers 40 Years In Three Episodes

There is a lot packed into the series. Apple TV says The Dynasty: UConn Huskies follows Geno Auriemma and the program's rise across 40 years, including its 12 national championships. The three episodes are titled “Fear of Failure,” “Enemy of the People” and “Breaking Point.”

Bird's own UConn career is featured heavily in the second episode, which focuses on the program's rivalry with Tennessee and the era involving Bird and Diana Taurasi. Apple TV also lists Bird, Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart among the players featured in the documentary, showing how many different generations had to fit into the limited runtime.

The third episode moves into the more recent years, including Paige Bueckers, UConn's injury struggles and the 2025 national championship season. That wide timeline explains Bird's main point. The documentary tells the story, but there was never enough room to give every star and every successful era the same amount of attention.
