Mark Boucher has joined the Toyota University Cricket Championship bandwagon on Friday. The recently-retired South African Test star, who holds the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicket-keeper, turned at the Jamia Millia University sports complex to commentate on the TUCC group B match between Jamia and APS University, Rewa.
A student of Selborne College, Boucher was amazed by the enthusiasm seen at the Jamia complex. Someone who has seen the frenzy of the Indian Premier League, Boucher felt the atmosphere on Friday night was "fantastic."
"College cricket is crucial for the game to grow and this one is already getting the right kind of support. TUCC is a perfect opportunity to stay in the game and pursue a career," said Boucher.
Boucher said school cricket is equally important and the transition to the college level and then to the domestic first-class system should happen naturally. "That will be proper development and I am sure this will eventually happen," Boucher said.
The South African who was forced to quit international cricket in July last year after an eye injury, feels that the TUCC should become "international" at some stage of its evolution. "It will nice to see the best of India, South Africa and Australia play at the college level," he said.
"The energy levels are extremely high at this stage of your life. While a college degree is very important, TUCC will help expose lot of cricket talent too. Good for the IPL as well," Boucher, who has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, said.
