Maria Sharapova played her first tour singles match in nearly 10 months Monday, beating Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in the first round of the Warsaw Open.

The Russian, who last played a singles match in August after being sidelined with a torn rotator cuff in her right shoulder, wore a bandage on her shoulder.

The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner and former No. 1 player wasted three match points in the second set. Currently ranked No. 126, Sharapova had played one doubles match since August.
