Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis failed to defend their WTA Finals title in Singapore after crashing out in the semifinals on Saturday.
The Indo-Swiss pair lost 6-3, 2-6, 6-10 to fourth seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in a match lasting an hour and 30 minutes.
Makarova and Vesnina will face Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova in the final. Bethanie and Lucie defeated top seeds Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 7-5 in the other semifinal.
Sania and Martina looked comfortable in the first set, winning it 6-3 but the Russian duo came out all guns firing in the second to take the set 6-2. With the match going into super tie-break, the No. 2 seeds conceded a 4-7 lead to the Russians.
Despite bringing the arrears down to 6-8, Sania and Martina left themselves too much to do and lost the super tie-break 6-10.
This was Sania and Martina's first competition since they had split following an early exit at Montreal in July.
After splitting with Martina, Sania teamed up with world number 21 Barbora Strycova from the Czech Republic. Martina chose Coco Vandeweghe of the United States of America as her new partner.
