Sania Mirza and Anastasia Rodionova suffered an upset first round exit from the Madrid Open, a premier WTA event, after losing to Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Shuai Zhang.
The sixth seed Indo-Australian combination lost 3-6 2-6 to German-Chinese combination in the opening round of the euro 3,755,140 clay court event.
Sania was defending 250 points here and for that she needed to reach at least the quarter-finals.
Sania and Rodionova lost the match under an hour as they failed to convert five breakpoints and lost their serve six times in the match.
