Rafael Nadal won his first match on the blue clay court at Madrid Open by easily defeating Nikolay Davydenko 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Nadal showed little discomfort on the court's surface that had been changed from red to blue color for the tournament. The Spanish champion had six aces and 19 winners. He broke his Russian opponent four times to advance to the third round.
In women's competition, defending champion Petra Kvitova exited the tournament after losing to Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
Earlier, China's Li Na reached the quarterfinals and Agnieszka Radwanska advanced after routing Sara Errani 6-0, 6-1, ending the Italian's 16-match winning streak.
Eighth-seeded Jon Isner is also out after losing to Marin Cilic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3). Fifth-seeded David Ferrer advanced after a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Radek Stepanek.
