Leander Paes recommended for Padma Bhushan: report

Reigning US Open doubles champion Leander Paes has been recommended by the Union sports ministry for the Padma Bhushan this year, according to a report in a leading newspaper. He is the only sportsperson to be selected for the prestigious award.

Four other sportspersons have been nominated for the Padma Shri. Those in the mix include veteran footballer and former India coach Arun Ghosh, eight-time national table tennis champion Indu Puri, India's first individual Olympic medalist wrestler Late KD Jadhav and former national shooting coach Sunny Thomas.

If Leander Paes were to be awarded the Padma Bhushan, he would become only the second tennis player to receive the award after Ramanathan Krishnan in 1967. Last year the sports ministry had nominated cricketer Rahul Dravid and wrestler Sushil Kumar for the award, with Dravid being bestowed the honour.

Recommendations:

Padma Bhushan: Leander Paes (tennis)

Padma Shri: Arun Ghosh (football), Indu Puri (table tennis), KD Jadhav (wrestling), Sunny Thomas (shooting)
