In the wake of shocking suicide attempt by four girl inmates at a SAI centre in Kerala in May, the Sports Ministry has constituted an expert committee to study the status of SAI centers around India.
The incident, in which a girl trainee lost her life in hospital, attracted wide-spread attention and underlined the need for systemic improvement to ensure well-being of inmates at SAI Centres.
The committee will be chaired by former athlete Ashwini Nachappa and will have Gopi Chand, Jaspal Sandhu (UGC Secretary), Malav Shroff, Bhogeshwar Barua, KP Mohan (Journalist), Baldev Singh (Hockey Expert) and Neena P. Nayak (Former Member, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights) as the other members.
The committee will be aiming to visit at least one or two centers in each region (North, South, East, West), study the various issues involved and give its recommendations.
SAI Centres are spread all over the country and have different issues in view of different cultures, climatic conditions, sports disciplines, backgrounds of athletes and locations, etc. The Committee may take into account such differences while making its recommendations.
