Home side Mumbai, who had thrashed Pune City FC 5-0 in their previous match, failed to score a goal despite dominating the proceedings early in the match in front of their home crowd at the DY Patil Stadium. Mtonga had stunned everyone with the goal in the 57th minute.

Mtonga had received a wonderful ball from Koke to score the opener for NorthEast United FC. Although it was just one goal, by then it was apparent that Mumbai would find it very tough to come back. The NorthEast defence had been watertight all through.
