Zaheer was joined by Shahbaz Nadeem, who struck twice in one over to leave Gujarat Lions reeling at 24/3.
Nadeem was the pick of the bowlers and his haul of 2/23 in three overs was the best for DD.
Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik came together to steady the innings as Delhi Daredevils maintained the pressure.
Karthik was at his fluent best as he scored his 11th IPL fifty.
This was Karthik's second fifty in the 2016 IPL. His previous fifty came against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Rajkot.
However, Karthik departed for 53 and it seemed Gujarat Lions would lose momentum towards the end.
Delhi Daredevils struck at regular intervals as Gujarat Lions struggled after the dismissals of Raina and Karthik.
Ravindra Jadeja, who was struggling for runs at the start of the tournament, came good with an important 36 off 26 balls as Gujarat Lions finished on 149/7.
In response, Delhi Daredevils got off to a blazing start with Quinton de Kock and Rishabh Pant taking the attack to the Gujarat Lions bowlers.
Pant, in particular, was severe on the Gujarat Lions bowlers and he got going with three consecutive fours off Dhawal Kulkarni.
Quinton de Kock was back among the runs and the opening partnership, which was worth 115 runs, put Delhi Daredevils on course.
Pant became the second youngest batsman to score a fifty in the IPL and his 69 deflated Gujarat Lions.
Shivil Kaushik and Ravindra Jadeja removed De Kock and Pant respectively but it was too late.
JP Duminy and Sanju Samson sealed a thumping eight-wicket win as Delhi Daredevils cruised to their fifth win in the 2016 IPL. For Gujarat Lions, it was their third defeat at home but they remained on top of the table.
