Vijay and Marcus Stoinis strung s 65-run stand but Gujarat Lions struck back with some quick wickets.
Shivil Kaushik, whose action resembles Paul Adams of South Africa, joined in the fun and he ran through the KXIP middle order.
Kaushik picked up 3/20 as KXIP struggled in the middle overs.
Kaushik's spell had put the brakes on KXIP's scoring and it seemed they would reach a low total.
Vijay held firm as he notched up a fifty on captaincy debut.
Kings XI Punjab kept losing wickets after Vijay's dismissal and some late hitting from Wriddhiman Saha (33) helped KXIP to 154.
Bravo chipped in with a couple of wickets and it seemed Gujarat Lions would coast to victory.
However, Axar Patel had other ideas as he ran through the Gujarat Lions batting order with some disciplined bowling.
Axar picked up three wickets in one over as Gujarat Lions were left reeling.
However, Axar came back in the 11th over and became the first bowler to take a hat-trick. He became the third KXIP bowler to take a hat-trick and it was the 14th overall in the IPL.
James Faulkner delayed the inevitable but it was not enough as Murali Vijay started his captaincy tenure with a bang as KXIP defeated Gujarat Lions by 23 runs.
