2nd Test, India vs Australia: How the hosts completed a fabulous victory
March 05, 2013 11:04
Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay were the catalysts with their superb centuries while R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar executed their roles to perfection.

Spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja produced a mesmerising spell as India crushed a clueless Australia by an innings and 135 runs in less than three and half days to win the second cricket Test and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series. (Photo credit: BCCI)

It all started with a certain UP guy, playing only his second Test, who rocked Australia's top-order on Day 1 after Michael Clarke once again won the toss and chose to bat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar's three wickets in Australia's first innings - David Warner, Ed Cowan and Shane Watson - may look diminishing in front of the crushing victory but they were as important for the eventual outcome. What was also heartening for India were the efforts of Harbhajan Singh as he dived around, looked enthusiastic and bowled decently enough. He is definitely not in the best of bowling form but if efforts were the parameter to judge, he was not far behind. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Michael Clarke's batting is probably the only silver lining for the visitors. His 91 here in the first innings has proven yet again the skills that he possesses against spin. Lack of any support though is hurting him. Clarke also said in the post-match conference that in Mohali, he will bat up the order. (Photo credit: BCCI)

When India lost Virender Sehwag early in their first innings, things looked iffy for the home side. Vijay was still to find his feet while Pujara could not even stand on his. Despite the injury though, the 'Wall' from Saurashtra did not let his batting get affected at all. The rest they say is history. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Murali Vijay too would have been under tremendous pressure after his poor performance in Chennai. He responded with grit though and Australia were left gasping. His 167 along with Pujara's 204 deflated the might of the Aussies. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Even the opposition was mesmerised by Pujara's innings. David Warner has not exactly found his touch but in congratulating the Indian, he was not far behind. Australia would be looking to invert this image if they have to impress in this Test series at all. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Another reason for Australia's poor performance would be the spinners. They dropped Nathan Lyon after his Chennai debacle but Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Doherty proved even less threatening in Hyderabad as Indian batsmen played merrily. By the time the Aussie tweakers came into their own, India had already run away with the match. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Ravindra Jadeja has not batted up to expectations but has been a revelation with the ball and in the field. His 6 wickets in the match and the magnificent run-out of Moises Henriques in the second innings, helped India a great deal in achieving the result. His dismissals of Michael Clarke were especially satisfying as he cleaned up his stumps on both occasions. (Photo credit: BCCI)

R Ashwin continued to impress with his bowling exploits. Australia has probably erred in concentrating only on the offie's batting (he batted well Down Under). Ashwin has hit back after the England debacle and looks a more potent force now. Another five-wicket haul means that he is well on his way to create some sort of history. (Photo credit: BCCI)

On the whole, it was another team effort by India. Australia have not put up team performances till now. It will need a miracle from the Aussies to fightback from this position while India will look to crush the visitors. A clean sweep beckons but never count out the Australians! (Photo credit: BCCI)
