Kovalchuk named NHL player of week

Atlanta Thrashers winger Ilya Kovalchuk was named the NHL player of the week on Monday for being the first player in six years to tally hat tricks in consecutive games.
Kovalchuk scored three goals in a 6-4 loss to Ottawa last Thursday, and another three in a 6-4 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday.
In his other game last week, the Russian posted the shootout winner to defeat Montreal 3-2 on October 29.
He leads the league with 12 goals in 14 games.
The last player to post hat tricks in consecutive games was Alex Kovalev for Pittsburgh in 2001.
