Helsinki, Finland:

Jan Marek scored on a late penalty shot for the Czech Republic to beat Finland 3-2 on Thursday in the Karjala Cup, the first tournament of the Euro Hockey Tour.

In a late game in Jonkoping, Sweden, defenseman Evgeni Medvedev gave Russia a 3-1-lead after 14 minutes in the third period, and Sweden was unable to reply.

The Russians led 2-1 after the first period with goals from Sergey Zinovyev and Alexei Tereschenko, the latter after Kenny Jonsson's equalizer.

In Helsinki, Marek beat goalkeeper Antti Niemi for the winner with 1:51 to go, after Finland defenseman Jukka-Pekka Laamanen drew a penalty shot by moving the goal cage with Marek in scoring position.

Petr Kumstat gave the Czechs a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal after 2:35 in the first period, but Finland replied through Teemu Aalto little more than a minute later.

Tomas Rolinek put the Czechs ahead again in the first minute of the third period, also on a power play, before Finland forward Janne Pesonen leveled at 10:09, following up a rebound of his own shot.

It was the first game in charge for Finland coach Doug Shedden, a Canadian who played 416 NHL games. Shedden coached Helsinki team Jokerit to second place in the Finnish league last season and combines coaching the club and national team.
