Bangalore:

Tanya Wadhwa finished tied for 23rd at the first-ever European tour golf event in India last week. It was the best finish by an Indian.

However, the 15-year-old was not entitled to any of the prize money of 1.1 crores since she is still an amateur.

But the best news is the promise she has shown for ladies golf, especially since she is a child prodigy who has managed to sustain her form.

Now the Indian Ladies may not have done well in India's first European Tour event, the Indian Ladies Masters but Tanya Wadhwa certainly got a lot of heads turning.

This correspondent caught up with the teenager who not only set the greens on fire but also got the award for the best amateur at the event by virtue of being tied for 23rd at the event.

No airs, no attitude, Tanya is just a girl who's letting her game do all the talking. At 15 years, Tanya Wadhwa is being touted as a successor to India's only LPGA player, Simi Mehra.

"
"From everyone that I've seen from the Indian players, she's the only one who's going to make it on the LPGA according to me," said Simi Mehra, India's Top Professional.

"She's got a solid game, a solid short game and hits it far enough and She's only 15. It's pretty amazing that she's shooting the score she's shooting in a European Tour event. She is the next rising star," she added.

Tanya was very much a Delhi girl till she was about 9 years. Infact, NDTV had interviewed her in 2001 when she finished third at the junior world golf championships. Even then her goals were quite clear.

Soon after that her family moved to America so that she could pursue her dream of becoming a professional golfer. Tanya, of course, has more than made the effort worthwhile. The world's top golf school, the David Ledbetter Academy gave her a scholarship.

"I want to play some LPGA events, qualify for some more, definitely qualify for the US Women's Open next year, bascially get some experience and exemptions on the tour," said Tanya Wadhwa, Top Amateaur, Indian Ladies Masters.

As for the other things you didn't know about Tanya.

Well, she is addicted to butter chicken, she is a keen pool player and she is even a black-belt in Taekwondo.

Wonder if she has ever used her Taekwondo skills on the course. She claims she has not.

And why will she, when she has got deadlier weapons in her golf bag. Tanya plans on turning professional only after she finishes school.
