Crans-sur-Sierre (Switzerland):

Shiv Kapur shunned extravagance and settled for a sedate opening round of two-under 69 to lie at tied 21st at the European Masters here.

In contrast, compatriot Gaurav Ghei's prospect of making the cut looks dim after the seasoned Indian went two-over 73 to be tied 106.

Shiv Kapur showed enough resilience to overcome occasional setbacks to hang in for a decent finish on a rain-swept day.

The Delhi lad, the 2005 Volvo Masters of Asia winner, had a perfect birdie start to his campaign and was in fact three-under before dropping his first bogey on the eigth hole.

On resumption, he bogeyed the 11th and 16th holes as well but birdies on the 12th and 14th kept things under control and the Indian eventually rounded of with a sub-par card against his name.

In contrast, Ghei had just one birdie to show, as against three bogeys which marred his show.

Teenager Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland shot a mindboggling nine-under 63, lowest round of his professional career, to grab the lead -- three shots ahead of Argentina's Julio Zapata and the Welsh pair of Garry Houston and Kyron Sullivan.
