New York:
Michael Campbell began his reign as the defending US Open Champion with a whirlwind tour of New York City on Monday that included an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman" TV talk show.
Campbell's win was the first in a major championship by a New Zealander since left-hander Bob Charles won the 1963 British Open.
With his thrilling two-stroke victory over Tiger Woods on a punishing Pinehurst course, Campbell's star rose exponentially on Sunday.
After a night of celebration, Campbell arrived in New York City on Monday morning for a media tour of the Big Apple.
An obviously exuberant Campbell arrived in a black limousine then signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans before heading into the legendary Ed Sullivan theatre to tape a segment on the Letterman show.
"Yeah, I love this city. It's got a very electric atmosphere and I love being in New York. I always come here once a year with my wife and do some shopping," Campbell said.
"But to be crowned the US Open champion, obviously I'm very honoured."
After his appearance on the David Letterman Show, Campbell was scheduled to board a plane home for New Zealand late on Monday night. (AP)
