Paris:
Rafael Nadal started his bid for a record seventh French Open championship with a mostly mistake-free 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory over 111th-ranked Simone Bolelli of Italy.
The second-seeded Nadal made only 18 unforced errors Tuesday, fewer than half as many as his opponent.
The Spaniard improved to 46-1 at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament. His only loss came in the fourth round in 2009, against Robin Soderling.
Nadal won the French Open every year from 2005-08, and again in 2010 and 2011. Bjorn Borg is the only other man with six titles at Roland Garros.
Nadal also is seeking his 11th Grand Slam trophy overall, which would pull him even with Borg and Rod Laver for fourth most in tennis history.
