The news of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari in 2025 took the Formula 1 world by storm. While fans were ecstatic at the prospect of Hamilton teaming up with young sensation Charles Leclerc in Ferrari, a lot of them were left wondering about the reason behind his sudden departure from Mercedes - a team that he joined back in 2013. According to a report by RacingNews365, Hamilton's decision may have been impacted by another big departure.
The report claimed that Hamilton took the decision after Head of Vehicle Performance at Mercedes Loic Serra also decided to join Ferrari for the 2025 campaign. Mercedes has struggled to keep up with Red Bull in the recent past and Hamilton last won a F1 race way back in December 2021.
In the past season, Hamilton expressed his concerns regarding the new car designed by Mercedes and the report further claimed that Serra had similar issues as Hamilton. With the duo joining Ferrari together in 2025, the goal will be to work towards mounting a big challenge to reigning champion Max Verstappen.
Hamilton had signed a two-year contract with Mercedes for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, but that deal contained a clause allowing him to leave after one season.
"I have had an amazing 11 years with this team and I'm so proud of what we have achieved together," Hamilton said.
"Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It's a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make."
Several reports say Hamilton's agreement with Ferrari was put together hastily as the team was in talks with Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, who announced he would be leaving the team before the end of the year.
"I and Ferrari will not continue together beyond 2024," said the 29-year-old from Madrid adding he would give everything for Ferrari this season.
