Sebastian Vettel was on Saturday handed a five place grid penalty and given three penalty points on his licence for overtaking under red flags in final practice for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.
The stewards at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve confirmed the sanction after summoning the four-time champion to their office after he had qualified only 16th for Sunday's race for Ferrari, due to energy recovery system failure.
The German driver passed Spaniard Roberto Merhi's Manor Marussia car during the third free practice session.
Vettel argued he believed the Manor man had a problem.
Talking to reporters before the inquiry Vettel admitted: "Obviously there was a red flag at the time I was behind the Manor and I don't know what his problem was... He was quite slow and I passed him."
