Jenson Button's performance at the British Grand Prix was a solid response to criticism from his McLaren team-chief Ron Dennis who said earlier in the week that he "needed to try harder".

Silverstone, United Kingdom:

Jenson Button, the 2009 champion, equalled his best previous finish at his home British Grand Prix by coming in fourth in his McLaren -- and was delighted for his victorious former team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

"I said before the race that if I did not win I hoped it would be Lewis. I'm just disappointed I was not up there with him," he said. (Also read: Ferrari's Raikkonen in ugly crash in British GP)

"I gave it my all. It's difficult when the race engineer says give it your all, but you have to save fuel too.

"But it's not so bad finishing fourth so we should be pleased. It's a step forward and we should enjoy the points."

Referring to his brief tussle with Hamilton as the Mercedes man attacked and passed him, he said: "I did not make it difficult for Lewis! You have to be careful in that situation or you'd lose time."

Button's performance was a solid response to criticism from his McLaren team-chief Ron Dennis who said earlier in the week that he "needed to try harder".
