Uruguay's Defensor Sporting advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana.

Quito:

Uruguay's Defensor Sporting advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana on Thursday, despite losing 2-0 to El Nacional of Ecuador in the second leg of their second-round match.

Ebelio Ordonez scored twice in the first 27 minute to give El Nacional the lead, but despite a partisan crowd at Quito's Atahualpa Stadium, it couldn't overcome the 3-0 loss in Montevideo last month in the first leg.

El Nacional hurt it own cause in the 35th minute when Jefferson Villacis was expelled for foul at midfield on Defensor foward Carlos Morales, forcing the Ecuadoreans to play with 10 men the rest of the way.

Defensor Sporting used a defensive posture to preserve its aggregate lead, but appeared to tire playing at altitude 2,850 meters (9,000 feet) above sea level.

Defensor Sporting will face Argentina's River Plata in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Oct 10.
