While buying all that heart desires should not be hard for successful sports personalities, UK's The Sun has revealed that there is still an easier way - get them free by tweeting the brands to fans from official Twitter accounts.
In what is a shrewd marketing strategy, the report claims that several football superstars post images with products or simply rave about certain products and services on their accounts. As a return favour, they get to keep their goodies - some quite flashy like Wayne Rooney's Nike golf club. "Just got my @NikeGolfEU Covert driver. Can't wait to get out & test it. #getcovert," wrote the Manchester United striker on his account which has over 6 million followers.
Rooney and his wife Coleen also name-checked several items to fans including a designer T-shirt for their three-year-old son Kai. A spokesperson for the couple though has defended their 'tweet-isments'. ""It's well known who Wayne's commercial endorsements are. We'll leave it at that."
Other well-known British sports personalities found to be tweeting out products include Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington and footballer Ashley Cole.
While Adlington wrote: "Thought I would try something abit different tonight... Quorn Spag Bol :-) was yummy!" The next month Quorn made her the face of their Make One Change campaign," Cole and his teammates posed with a brand of headphones.
The same report however reads that it is not just sporting figures who are 'promoting' products through the micro-blogging platform. The extensive list includes singers, TV personalities, radio anchors, models among others.
