Highbury:
Arsenal eliminated nine-time champion Real Madrid to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League on Wednesday with a 0-0 draw at Highbury.
Arsenal advanced 1-0 on aggregate over two legs, reaching the quarterfinals for the third time in six seasons.
Madrid looked certain to score in the 60th minute when Raul Gonzalez hit the post and Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann made a subsequent diving save on the Spaniard's follow-up shot.
"It is amazing. You have seen tonight what great desire can achieve. They had a couple of chances, then we could have grabbed a couple before halftime. Then Jens' magnificent save changed the match.' said Arsenal captain Thierry Henry.
Arsenal, which has never won the European Cup, reached the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2004. "Tonight was a demonstration that you can play a great 0-0,'' manager Arsene Wenger said.
"We played good football and unfortunately, we weren't clinical enough,'' said Juan Ramon Lopez Caro, Madrid coach.
"The two teams like to play football. Everyone should be happy because it was a good spectacle," he added.
Real Madrid woes
Madrid trails FC Barcelona by 10 points in the Spanish league. Despite soccer's top talent, the club hasn't won a trophy in three years.
"There will always be big questions asked of a team as big as us,'' said Madrid midfielder David Beckham, who was the only English player on the pitch.
Beckham was making his first appearance in England since joining Madrid three years ago. (AP)
