PSV Eindhoven suffer 1-0 home defeat

Eindhoven:

PSV Eindhoven's hopes of closing the gap on Dutch First Division leaders AFC Ajax suffered a severe blow on Sunday following a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Feyenoord. Ebi Smolarek's first-half strike was enough for victory for Feyenoord, who move up to third in the table on the back of the win. Some sloppy control from PSV's Danish defender Kasper Bogelund in the centre circle proved fatal in the 13th minute. The pacy Thomas Buffel set off goalward, rather selfishly ignored Anthony Lurling alongside him and was thwarted by PSV goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus. But Ebi Smolarek lifted the follow-up into the roof of an empty net. The question before the game was where the PSV goals would come from, with top scorer Mateja Kezman suspended after a fourth yellow card last week and chief provider Arjen Robben sidelined for at least a month with an Achilles tear. In their absence, neither Johan Vonlanthen, nor John de Jong, seemed capable of hitting the target, let alone scoring, as Feyenoord were happy to sit back and absorb the pressure. And even when PSV did get the direction right, Feyenoord keeper Patrick Lodewijks was up to the challenge. A disappointing afternoon for PSV coach Guus Hiddink - nine points behind leaders Ajax, their title challenge is fading fast. Feyenoord are up to third, six points behind PSV. (AP)
