Eindhoven, The Netherlands:
Leaders PSV Eindhoven could afford the luxury of missing two penalties on the way to defeating RBC Roosendaal 4-1 in the Dutch Eredivisie on Wednesday.
But Eindhoven struggled in the first-half of Wednesday's Eredivisie fixture, not what was expected against such lowly opponents.
When the Dutch giants were gifted golden scoring opportunities, thanks to some rash challenges, and possibly, debatable refereeing decisions, they found RBC goalkeeper Maikel Aerts in superb form.
He almost single-handedly kept his side in the match - saving penalties from, firstly, Mark van Bommel and then in the 36th minute, Andre Ooijer.
Still Roosendaal didn't learn from the error of their ways. After the interval, the poorly-timed tackles continued to fly in.
Crushing resistance
One cost Melvin Fleur his chance of completing the 90 minutes in the Philips Stadion and allowed van Bommel to atone for his earlier failure.
The opener came in the 51st minute, seven minutes later and van Bommel had doubled the lead.
PSV now looked to be cruising with RBC's resistance crushed. But Doelman Gomes contrived to hand the strugglers a 73rd-minute lifeline and this gaff was eagerly pounced on by Danny Guyt.
Roosendaal were back in the game, at least for a couple of minutes. Weekend hat-trick hero Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink hit his 13th of the season in the 75th minute - courtesy of a fourth and final intervention by referee Roland van der Hilst.
The penalty spot must have been well worn by this point. John de Jong rounded off the scoring in the 83rd minute.
4-1 the final score, harsh on a game Roosendaal side, but Guus Hiddink won't be complaining.
The PSV coach might consider though, to order extra penalty-taking practice at the next team training session. (AP)
