London:

Sunderland defender John Mensah's red card against Liverpool has been quashed on appeal, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The Ghana international was given his marching orders by referee Kevin Friend for an 81st-minute foul on Luis Suarez.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce questioned whether Mensah's foul was worthy of a straight red and the club launched a successful appeal.

The decision means Mensah will now be available for Sunderland's trip to Manchester City on April 3.

"We thank the Football Association for considering our appeal and naturally we are delighted he will be available for the game against Manchester City," Bruce said.
