Liverpool:
Peter Crouch scored two goals for Liverpool to edge Galatasaray 3-2 in Group B of the Champions League on Wednesday.
The England striker scored in the ninth minute with a side-footed volley on a pinpoint cross by left-back Fabio Aurelio, and midfielder Luis Garcia headed in Liverpool's second goal in the 14th.
Crouch added his second with an acrobatic shot inside the box in the 52nd on a cross by Steve Finnan.
"It's nice to get a goal like that. It was obviously a special one - you don't get too many of those,'' Crouch said. "Most of the time they go over the stand and thankfully that one went in the corner and it's got us the win, so it's great.''
Umit Karan headed past goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the 59th, and he headed in his second goal in the 65th to set up an exciting finish. But Hakan Sukur and Sabri Sarioglu missed chances to equalize.
"It shouldn't have been that nervy,'' Crouch said. "It was a confident 3-0 and we just wanted to see the game out. We worked so hard in the first half, maybe it caused a lapse in the second half.''
Galatasaray goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon had earlier turned a shot by Dirk Kuyt onto the post and blocked Steven Gerrard's follow-up attempt.
PSV Eindhoven beat Bordeaux 1-0 in the other Group C game. Liverpool and PSV lead the pool with four points, three more than Galatasaray and Bordeaux. Bordeaux hosts Liverpool and PSV travels to Galatasaray on October 18. (AP)
