Liverpool owner John Henry, who also owns baseball's Boston Red Sox, says there's no truth to reports that American owners in the English Premier League want to end the relegation and promotion system.
Henry told The Associated Press that comments by League Managers' Association chief executive Richard Bevan were "complete nonsense."
Bevan told reporters in London this week that some of the foreign owners of Premier League teams want to abolish the system that sends the bottom three teams to the second-tier Football League Championship. But Henry said that "hasn't been discussed."
Half of the Premier League's teams are foreign-owned, including Liverpool.
American sports leagues don't follow the European model that relegates the bottom teams in the standings and promotes the top teams from the lower tier.
