Zurich:
Italy has 1,604 points, followed by Argentina with 1,594 and Brazil is third with 1,520.
Italy's 2-0 win over Scotland in a 2008 European Championship qualifier on March 28 helped it return to the top, ending the one-month stay by Argentina, which has not played since last month's rankings.
Argentina was also hurt by a devaluation of results from previous years. So was Brazil, despite recording friendly wins over Ghana and Chile in March.
France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, England, Spain and the Czech Republic round out the top 10. The United States moved up one place to 29 with 782 points.
Big movers included Turkey, up 10 places to 17th, Ireland, up 20 places to 31st, and Northern Ireland, up 14 places to 33rd to equal its highest world ranking performance from May 1994.
Cameroon moved up five places to 13th and Nigeria up nine places to 27th after qualifying wins for the African Cup of Nations.
