I will be appointed manager of Chelsea this week, says Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has said he expects his return to Chelsea as manager to be confirmed later this week.

The Portuguese took charge of Real Madrid for the final time on Saturday after a three-year spell in charge and arrived in London on Sunday to finalise the deal.

"I cannot speak as manager of Chelsea because I am not. I am going to London and I think that between Monday and the end of the week I will be the coach of Chelsea," he told Spanish television programme Punto Pelota in an interview released on Monday.

"I expect to be the next coach of Chelsea. I would like to be it because I was happy in London and I feel that the people love me there.

"Life is beautiful and short and in life you have to look for what you think is best for you."

Mourinho's time in Madrid came to a controversial end in Saturday's 4-2 win over Osasuna as he was booed by the majority of the crowd on his final appearance at the Bernabeu, but was supported by the club's ultra group of fans and even went to take pictures with some of those in that section after the final whistle.

And the 50-year-old even had one last go at the Spanish press after they reported on Saturday morning that Iker Casillas, Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo's absence from his final game in charge had been Mourinho's decision rather than due to injuries as he claimed afterwards.

Those incidents were just the latest in what has been a turbulent final season for Mourinho in Madrid.

Public clashes with a number of high-profile players have exacerbated a hugely disappointing season on the field in which they meekly surrendered their La Liga title to Barcelona and also lost the Copa del Rey final at their own Santiago Bernabeu stadium to rivals Atletico Madrid.

However, it was a third consecutive Champions League semi-final defeat to Borussia Dortmund in April that was the biggest disappointment as just like in his first stint at Chelsea, Mourinho failed to repeat his Champions League winning feats at Porto and Inter Milan despite overseeing the most expensive squad of players ever assembled.

The 50-year-old did though enjoy a hugely successful time on the domestic front during his first spell in charge of Chelsea between 2004 and 2007.

Mourinho guided the blues to their first league title in 50 years in 2005 and they went onto retain their title in 2006.

However, he failed to deliver Russian owner Roman Abramovich the trophy that he most coveted in the Champions League and after semi-final exits to Liverpool in 2005 and 2007, they parted ways after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Rosenborg in September 2007.
