Geneva:

German football coach Ottmar Hitzfeld on Thursday signed a fresh two-year contract with Switzerland that will take him through to summer 2014, the Swiss Football Federation said.

Hitzfeld, one of Germany's most successful club coaches with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, took the Swiss national side to the World Cup finals in South Africa last year after taking up the job in July 2008.

The 62 year-old's contract was due to expire in mid-2012, but he will now stay on for the 2014 World Cup if Switzerland qualify.
