London:
Steven Gerrard has been voted Footballer of the Year by England's Football Writer's Association for his efforts in putting Liverpool in contention for a first Premier League title since 1990.
The 28-year-old Liverpool captain has scored 15 league goals from an attacking midfield role to make his team a genuine rival to defending champion Manchester United.
Only forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Nicolas Anelka have hit more league goals this season than Gerrard, who has even out-scored teammate Fernando Torres.
"Steven's performances this season have been of the highest quality," FWA chairman Steve Bates said Wednesday. "His drive and desire have underpinned Liverpool's Premier League title challenge and ensured a tight finish to the season.
"Steven is clearly in his prime and quite rightly rated one of the finest midfield players of his generation, and the FWA are delighted to honor his contribution to club and country."
The FAW said Gerrard beat Manchester United's Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to the award.
Giggs already won the more prestigious Player of the Year award, which is voted for by professional footballers.
