Former Dutch international and Ajax stalwart Danny Blind was named as the new coach of the Amsterdam club on Monday. Blind is a permanent replacement for Ronald Koeman, who resigned in February after Ajax were knocked out of the UEFA Cup. He will take up his post immediately and has signed a contract that will extend to the summer of 2007. Forty-three-year-old Blind played 372 games for Ajax and made 42 appearances for Holland in a glittering career. Next steps Blind moves over from head of the Ajax academy to the top job, and described his promotion as a natural progression. "When you stop as a player, coaching football is the next thing," he said. Blind will have the advantage of already being familiar with some of the players who have come through the youth system, but knows there is plenty of work to do with the rest of the squad. "I know some players, but I think I need the time, the next days and weeks to speak a lot to look around a lot and make the right decisions," he said. Early challenge Meanwhile, a challenge awaits Blind in his first game in charge, a home match with leaders PSV Eindhoven, and Ajax have to win to stand any chance of retaining their league title. "It's a big match against a team which is doing very well at this moment, playing very well at a high level, but of course, it's only one game and there are only three points to lose or to win," he said. Blind has signed a contract that will run until the end of the 2007 season and will be hoping that some of his success as a player will rub off on his team. (AP)
