Campbell signs with Portsmouth

Sol Campbell signed a two-year deal with Portsmouth on Tuesday. The former Arsenal defender passed his medical and trained with his new teammates at Fratton Park before signing his contract with Pompey. Terms of the deal were not released. "I told him Portsmouth are a club going places, a good club to come to," manager Harry Redknapp said. "It's a very ambitious club now. We are going to keep moving forward and he can be part of something very exciting. So I think he was up for that". Campbell left Arsenal in July looking "for a fresh challenge" and attracted interest from Turkey's Fenerbahce. The decision to move to Portsmouth puzzled Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. "I have no regrets, but it is a big surprise to me because he canceled his contract to go abroad," Wenger said. Campbell, 31, made 197 appearances after joining the Gunners from crosstown rival Tottenham in 2001. During Campbell's five years, Arsenal won five major trophies, including two league titles and three FA Cups. He has made 69 appearances for England and was a member of the national squad at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups. (AP)
