Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden is expected to be out of action for six months with a knee injury, the Premier League club confirmed on Monday.
Holden had 26 stitches inserted in the gash on his knee following a challenge with Manchester United's Jonny Evans in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday, which saw the defender sent off.
The 25-year-old United States international will take no further part in the season, including the FA Cup semifinal against Stoke at Wembley on April 17.
Manager Owen Coyle said the main focus was getting the Aberdeen-born player back to full fitness.
"First and foremost our main concern is Stuart and his recovery. He will get all the time and support he needs," said Coyle.
