Barcelona:

Newly-elected president of Barcelona football club, Joan Laporta, said yesterday that his victory will put the club back on top of the world. Members of FC Barcelona voted in a presidential election earlier dominated by the prospect of English football star David Beckham coming to rescue the beleaguered Spanish giant. Six candidates, mostly businessmen, were battling for the job left vacant when Joan Gaspart resigned in February after Barcelona performed dismally in his two-and-a-half-years in charge. The debt-ridden team has gone four years without a trophy, and at one point in this season was in danger of slipping into the relegation zone.
