Switzerland beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw on Tuesday to set up a quarter-final with defending champions Argentina. The two teams cancelled each other out in the final game of the last 16 -- the last match to be played at the 2026 tournament outside the United States. Both teams missed spot-kicks before Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel brilliantly saved Cucho Hernandez's effort and Ruben Vargas scored the decisive penalty.

It is a bit surprising that there has not been a single goal in this match. Colombia once again had an opening but Kobel was out in a flash and he took care of the cross. This is slowly moving towards extra time.

Vargas and Embolo went for the same ball and it looks like the collision took the winds out of the goalkeeper's lungs. He is on the ground but it looks like he is doing just fine.

A massive miss for Colombia as Luis Suarez's effort flies wide of the goal. He was in the perfect position but the finishing was just not up to the mark!

Switzerland and Colombia were scoreless at the half-time with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. The winner will face defending champion Argentina on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Switzerland has not reached the quarterfinals of a World Cup since hosting the tournament in 1954. And the Swiss were shorthanded without midfielder Johan Manzambi, who was injured in training.

Colombia advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2014 World Cup but fell to host Brazil. Gustavo Puerta had the first good chance for Colombia with a shot from distance in the 21st minute that was pushed away by Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The Swiss got their opportunity in the 30th with Fabian Reider’s blast at Camilo Vargas, who punched the ball down. Minutes later, Vargas smothered another attempt from Dan Ndoye.

This has been a sensational period of play for Colombia. They are looking more reassured with every minute and the attacks are getting more dangerous. A great effort by Munoz followed by Diaz's acrobatic try. But, still no success!

The ball fell kindly to Freuler who took a strong shot but Vargas was there in the perfect place to complete the save. The first proper chance for Switzerland and Colombia will have to be more careful!

A curling effort from Puerta and it took a stunning save by Kobel to keep the score 0-0. Colombia have been brilliant in their approach till now and they are one in control. However, considering the class of Switzerland, they will need one good move to stamp their authority on this match.

Colombia had a set-piece in a brilliant position and his loopy free-kick caused a lot of problem for Switzerland. A wayward header ended up in Kobel's gloves but the danger was quite real for some time.
