It will be interesting to see whether Axar Patel comes out to bat at No. 5. Axar's usage at No. 5, ahead of KL Rahul, was a successful move made by Gautam Gambhir during India's victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. However, with Axar being prioritised for T20Is over the last year, Rahul has returned to the No. 5 role. Let's see who bats there today!

With the asking rate just over 5, this is certainly a gettable target for India. India have batting till No. 8 today, where Washington Sundar is likely to bat. A number of left-handers down the order in Axar, Dube and Washington, but the onus will fall first on the Top 5, which comprises right-handers Gill, Rohit, Kohli, Shreyas and Rahul.

The return of ODI action means the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Kohli has looked energetic in the field today, but can he continue his excellent run of form with bat in hand? Pressure will also be on Rohit, around whom speculation continues over form and fitness.

"India should've gone for the kill. Don't treat it as a 50 overs match, but a 40 overs match. Don't keep your best bowlers for the end, bring them in early, that's the gamble you go for as a captain," says former India head coach Ravi Shastri, speaking at the mid-innings break.

Axar Patel cleans up Josh Tongue and that ends the England innings! The Three Lions have been bundled out for 258. Joe Root remains not out at score of 76, while Axar is the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 4 for 62.

"It might be good for the fast bowlers in the first innings., There's a good covering of grass. There's a lot of moisture content. The team winning the toss will want to bowl first," said Varun Aaron.

Both Washington Sundar and Axar Patel were massive disappointments during the T20I series in both batting and bowling. But they are unlikely to bear any consequences as they outscore the team's best spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, on perception of "better willow wielding" abilities. Kuldeep, by a country mile, is a better spinner and the only one among the three with an ability to turn the ball even when there is nothing on offer from the surface.

India's new fast bowling hope Gurnoor Brar, after an impressive start against Afghanistan at home, will face a completely different challenge with his lengths on English tracks. Arshdeep Singh will certainly add dimension as the left-arm seamer in the pack while Shivam Dube, a forced choice due to the absence of an injured Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy, will be the fourth seamer at Edgbaston.

According to a report by the Times of India, the BCCI is looking to implement a rotation policy, in order to test all the players ahead of the 2027 World Cup. However, the management is hesitating to convey this message to the senior duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. As per the plans, the management wants to test every player in the squad by giving them a chance in the XI. For that, Kohli and Rohit also have to make way for someone. 

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma presence for this series certainly holds more significance after the Indian team, under a new T20 skipper Shreyas Iyer, lost all but one of its seven T20I matches in the ongoing tour. The only match they didn't lose was a game that got abandoned. The 0-2 defeat versus Ireland and 0-4 thrashing handed by England has opened a Pandora's Box with BCCI calling for a performance review.

Virat Kohli returns on the verge of multiple milestones. Birmingham is set to witness his 300th ODI innings, while another productive series could take the former captain beyond 15,000 ODI runs. Since the beginning of 2025, he has averaged an astonishing 123 across his last seven ODI innings.

India's batting once again wears a familiar look. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are set to reunite at the top of the order, a partnership that averages 60.9 in ODIs. Gill heads into the series in red-hot form, having amassed 373 runs in five innings this year at an average of 93.3 and a strike rate of 117, including three half-centuries and a hundred.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, along with Jasprit Bumrah, are back in the mix to play the format in which bilaterals have been losing both context and sheen amid growing popularity of T20 cricket. The 39-year-old Rohit and the soon-to-be 38 Kohli still have the fire in their bellies and the runs to show for their efforts as they aim for a ODI World Cup swansong.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to the Indian team for the first time since the start of the year against when India had squared off against New Zealand. With India heading into the 3-match ODI series against England on the back of a 0-4 defeat in T20Is, Kohli will be key to the team's plans of redemption. 

The talismanic batter would also be keen to topple Rahul Dravid and become India's highest-scoring player against England in ODIs.
