Batsman | R | B | 4s | 6s | SR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Danushka Gunathilaka | 30 | 25 | 4 | 0 | 120 |
b Todd Astle
8.5 OUT! Another googly and another ball shatters the timber. Astle gets his number two. Pitched on middle and leg, Gunathilaka looks to block but he is squared up as he reads the spin wrong. Expected it be a leg spinner but it turns just a hint to miss the block and hit the woodwork behind. That is a good start wasted. Gunathilaka was looking in good shape out there. Correction. He was the only man looking in good shape out there but fails to go on. 50/3

Kusal Perera Wk | 3 | 12 | 0 | 0 | 25 |
c Todd Astle b Mitchell Santner
4.1 OUT! He strikes first ball. Not the ball on which you get out to. Kusal will be kicking himself for this one. It is a poor ball down the leg side. Perera looks to paddle this fine down the leg side but he can only manage to lob this one straight in the hands of Todd Astle at short fine leg. 31/1
|
|||||
Avishka Fernando | 6 | 12 | 1 | 0 | 50 |
b Todd Astle
6.4 OUT! BOWLED! This was a googly. And more importantly, this was an excellent change of pace. Landed outside off, Fernando goes back to punch it through the off side. But he is foxed twice. First, he thinks this is a leg spinner. Strike 1. Then, he reads it off the surface and looks to punch it through the off side, against the spin but does so a bit too hurriedly. The ball is a touch slow, spins in slowly and goes past the bat to hit the stumps. Strike 2. MAIDEN T20I WICKET FOR TODD ASTLE! 39/2
|
|||||
Niroshan Dickwella | 24 | 15 | 3 | 0 | 160 |
c Colin Munro b Mitchell Santner
12.2 OUT! Caught! Second wicket for Santner and both set batsmen are gone now. Full and around middle, Dickwella gets down and laps it fine. But he has only lobbed it straight into the lap of Colin Munro at short fine leg. Again, just when some momentum was being gained, it has been cut off. 77/4
|
|||||
Lahiru Madushanka | 20 | 23 | 1 | 0 | 86.95 |
lbw b Mitchell Santner
15.4 OUT! LBW! That is what dots can do. Put pressure. Madushanka comes down the track to try and manufacture something, aiming to flick it against the line but misses. Is hit on the pads. Santner appeals, the umpire takes his time and then raises the finger of slow death. 101/6
|
|||||
Dasun Shanaka | 7 | 6 | 1 | 0 | 116.66 |
c Daryl Mitchell b Todd Astle
14.5 OUT! In the air... and caught! Third wicket for Todd Astle. Full and outside off, Shanaka lines up for another slog sweep. But this time, extra bounce and extra time for the ball to arrive does him in. Gets a top edge which balloons towards deep mid-wicket where Daryl Mitchell takes it calmly. The bowler rushes towards the fielder to celebrate and mouths, 'GOTCHA!' 98/5

run out (Tim Seifert)
17 OUT! Mix-up, mix-up, mix-up and a run out this time! Action replay of the previous delivery but with a wicket now. Udana, like Hasaranga on the previous ball, steered this behind point and charged back for the second. His partner, like Udana on the previous ball, sent Isuru back. Only this time, Udana had come a meter too far. He has to stop, turn and then get back. By that time, Santner had returned a rocket throw to the keeper who fired it to the bowler. Rance collects and takes the bails off. 109/7
|
|||||
Akila Dananjaya | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Scott Kuggeleijn
17.2 OUT! BOWLED! Change of pace again. The cutter from Kuggeleijn, around leg and middle, Dananjaya backs away to the leg side, attempting to run it down to third man but misses. Castled. 109/8

b Lasith Malinga
2.3 OUT! Castles Munro with a beauty. 100th T20I wicket for him. You can't keep Malinga out of the match for a long time. Goes to his main weapon as he bowls this quick yorker. Munro looks to flick and misses. The ball sneaks through the bat to hit the leg pole. Munro couldn't have done much to that one as it swung late. Can he continue doing the magic and help them defend this total? 15/1

Tim Seifert Wk | 8 | 13 | 1 | 0 | 61.53 |
c Danushka Gunathilaka b Lasith Malinga
4.4 OUT! Malinga has five. Are you kidding me? Another one bites the dust for the visitors. A fullish ball this time outside off. Seifert after showing good defense goes for a drive over the covers but the outswing does him and he can only manage an outside edge to Gunathilaka at wide first slip. He has 8 balls left in his spell. How many Kiwi wickets can he rip apart? 23/5
|
|||||
Hamish Rutherford | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
lbw b Lasith Malinga
2.4 OUT! Two in two for Malinga. A duck for Rutherford on return. On the pads this time on a fullish length. The new batter, Rutherford goes for a flick but he is very late on the stroke. The ball swings in and goes to hit the pads hard as the Lankans make a loud appeal. The umpire does not agree but Malinga wants the third umpire to have a look at it. The Ultra Edge shows no bat. The Hawk Eye rolls in and it shows that it was hitting the leg stump. The umpire will have to change his decision here and a great review from the Lankan skipper. 15/2

Colin de Grandhomme | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Lasith Malinga
2.5 OUT! Malinga you champion. Hat-trick number two for him in T20I. He is on fire. And the Kiwis can do nothing about him. What a ripper from Malinga again. Another inswinging yorker. De Grandhomme is late to bring his down again. The ball goes onto disturb the timbers once again. They are checking for the front foot no ball and it is a very close call. However, the third umpire deems it in the favor of the bowler this time as Malinga breathes a sigh of a relief. What a legend! 15/3
|
|||||
Ross Taylor | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
lbw b Lasith Malinga
3 OUT! Malinga... Malinga... Four in four for him. This man is just out of the world. He is making a mockery of this Kiwi batting line-up. Ross Taylor is out of here now. This time a fullish ball to the new man. The ball lands and just shapes a hint away from the push of Taylor. He can't get bat on ball and his hit on the pads. Malinga appeals along with the crowd. The umpire agrees. Malinga roars. The crowd roars. What a magician with the ball in hand. New Zealand are already on the mat inside three overs. 15/4

Daryl Mitchell | 6 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 85.71 |
run out (Wanindu Hasaranga)
8.1 OUT! Now a run out and Mitchell can not believe it. This is a fullish ball on middle, Mitchell works it towards mid-wicket and wants a couple straight away. There was never a couple as the fielder hared at the ball. It was a rocket throw from Wanindu Hasaranga from the deep mid-wicket position for Perera who tries to break the stumps. However, while doing so, he loses control of the ball. It is referred upstairs and replays show that the ball indeed popped out of Perera's gloves and his gloves did hit the stumps, but in between these two actions, the ball deflected onto the stumps. And Mitchell is found short of his crease. This is going to end way too early it seems. 46/6

|||||
Mitchell Santner | 16 | 15 | 1 | 0 | 106.66 |
st Kusal Perera b Akila Dananjaya
8.4 OUT! STUMPED! The foot is behind the line and this is the third wicket of the over. Madness in Pallekele. We are not even halfway through the innings and 80 percent of the team is in the hut. The googly, outside off, Santner looks to run it down to third man but misses. Now, that shot makes him drag his foot outside the crease and Kusal Perera is quick as lightning to whip the bails off. Perera is running towards the bowler in celebration even as the square leg umpire refers it upstairs. Replays show that the foot is out of the crease. 47/8
|

Scott Kuggeleijn | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Akila Dananjaya
8.2 OUT! BOWLED! Again, a 2-in-2 situation for Sri Lanka. Only this time, the bowler is not on a hat-trick. The leg spinner outside off, Kuggeleijn lunges to defend but the ball hits his elbow and goes onto the ground. Then, it rolls back, hits the pads and trickles onto the stumps! 46/7

lbw b Wanindu Hasaranga
10 OUT! Hasaranga strikes for Sri Lanka now. Just a wicket away from a win. This is a fullish ball, Astle wants to sweep it fine down the leg side but can't get bat on the ball. He is wrapped on the pads. Hasaranga appeals along with the entire stadium. The umpire agrees. Astle wants the third umpire to have a look at it but only for the sake of it. Ultra Edge shows no bat. The Hawk Eye shows that this is going to topple the middle stump which means Astle will have to walk back. 52/9
|
|||||
Seth Rance | 8 | 17 | 0 | 0 | 47.05 |
lbw b Lakshan Sandakan
16 OUT! Game over! What a terrific bowling effort from the hosts. A flighted ball on middle, Rance looks to sweep but fails to get bat on ball. He is hit flush on the pads. The Lankans appeal and the umpire agrees to end the New Zealand innings. Rance looks for a review but then he is informed that there is none left for New Zealand. Would not have mattered. Hawk Eye shows the impact to be umpire's call, around off and clipping the off stump, again, on umpire's call. The 36-run stand would've given the Lankan fans some worry. Rance should've tried to negotiate the ball and get Southee on strike but he went for the sweep to confirm the eventual. 88/10
