Lahiru Thirimanne | 4 | 22 | 0 | 0 | 18.18 |
6.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Gone.... the leg slip was there. England strike. It was straight to Jonny at leg slip there. The plan has worked for England. Fullish length delivery, angled into middle and leg, Lahiru closes the face of his bat to flick that one. He though finds Bairstow at leg slip. It went just a hint to the right of Jonny Bairstow, who lunges forward and takes that one. 16/1

Kusal Perera | 20 | 28 | 2 | 0 | 71.42 |
10.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Oh.... what has he done? What has Kusal Perera done? Full length ball outside off, Perera tries to be unconventional. He looks to reverse sweep that one but gets it uppish and straight into the hands of Joe Root there, at slip. 25/3
Kusal Mendis |
2 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
6.5 OUT! TAKEN! Got him! That is the 4th duck in a row for Mendis. This is just a man without any sort of confidence whatsoever. This is good bowling from Stuart Broad. He bowls a legcutter, disguises it well, and bowls it outside off. Kusal Mendis hangs his bat outside the line, looking to defend. But it takes the outside edge and Jos does well to come forward and take the catch. 16/2

Angelo Mathews | 27 | 54 | 1 | 1 | 50 |
29 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Brilliant catch by Joe Root. Broad gets another one. A shortish ball outside off, Mathews looks to cut that one hard, but ends up edging it to the first slip. Root there reacts quickly and takes this catch to his right. Mathews goes after getting set. Sri Lanka 4 down now. 81/4
Dinesh Chandimal | 28 | 71 | 1 | 0 | 39.43 |
29.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Dinesh Chandimal....what have you done? Jack has his first wicket here. Venues might have changed but not Sri Lanka's fortunes here. Loopy and outside off, Dinesh comes on the front foot and looks to drive that one. He does so uppishly and finds Sam at cover. What a good catch it was though. Curran dives forward and pulls off a very good catch. 81/5
Niroshan Dickwella | 12 | 21 | 1 | 0 | 57.14 |
38.1 OUT! TAKEN! Sri Lanka sliding further into trouble. Niroshan goes for 12. It was a poor ball actually. Short and wide outside off, Dickwella rocks back and looks to carve it over point. But would you believe it? He picks out Sibley at point to perfection, who tumbles behind and takes the catch. Oh my goodness! 105/6
Dasun Shanaka | 23 | 48 | 3 | 0 | 47.91 |
42.3 OUT! CAUGHT! How cruel can the Lankans' luck be. Dasun goes for 23. It did look a clean catch even though the umpires decided to have a look at that. Tossed up ball on the stumps, Shanaka gets down and looks to sweep. It hits the boot of Bairstow, at short leg, as the Englishman turned his back and looked to avoid making contact with the ball. After taking his boot, the ball lobs in the air and Jos Buttler runs forward and takes the catch. How much more unluckier can a batsman be? 126/7
Wanindu Hasaranga | 19 | 22 | 2 | 0 | 86.36 |
46.1 OUT! TIMBER! Bess gets his 2nd 5-wicket haul. First one was in Port Elizabeth. 2nd one here in Galle. Sri Lanka have now registered their lowest ever first innings total, here at Galle. Tossed up ball on middle and leg, Wanindu looks to reverse sweep that one but he misses. The ball goes onto hit the woodwork. SRI LANKA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 135 IN THEIR FIRST INNINGS! AND, TEA HAS BEEN TAKEN ON DAY 1! 135/10
Dilruwan Perera |
2 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
42.5 OUT! BOWLED! Off spinner gets the off spinner. Perera played all over it there. He goes for a duck. Sri Lanka sink further. Floats the offbreak around off, it pitches and turns in. Dilruwan Perera looked to drive that through the covers but misses. The stumps are shattered. Sri Lanka have thrown away every advantage that they have gained, by winning the toss earlier. 126/8
Lasith Embuldeniya |
1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
43.5 OUT! RUN OUT! What a way to get out. A floated ball on middle, Hasaranga comes down the track and hits the ball straight down towards the bowler. Leach gets a hand to this one and the ball hits the stumps at the non-striker's end. Embuldeniya there was backing up too far and is found short of his crease. The umpires send it upstairs to have a check whether Leach had got his hand there. The replays show the ball touched his hand and the batter was well short of his crease. Sri Lanka 9 down now. 130/9

Zak Crawley | 9 | 26 | 1 | 0 | 34.61 |
8.4 OUT! TAKEN! Lasith Embuldeniya has got 2 wickets here. And he is happy. But not Crawley. He goes for 9. Floated delivery on middle and off, Zak gives himself room on the off side and looked to go over mid off. The ball comes, clips his boot and then the shot is through from Zak. It goes high in the air, but Wanindu, who was at mid off, backtracks, and takes a good catch. Never easy those catches, the ones where a fielder has to move backward and take it. Hasaranga did well here. 17/2
Dom Sibley | 4 | 15 | 0 | 0 | 26.66 |
4.2 OUT! TAKEN! Good decision by the third umpire. Dom Sibley departs. England lose their first wicket, with 10 runs on the board. Floated around off and middle, it pitches and breaks away. Sibley prods forward and looks to work it on the leg side. To the naked eye though, he seems to have missed and the ball clipped his pads and went to first slip, who took it. Thirimanne was the man there. The Lankans go up in appeal, for a catch but the umpire is unmoved. They seem certain and review it. UltraEdge is in and confirms that there was a fine edge there. Sibley has to walk back here. 10/1
Jonny Bairstow | 47 | 93 | 2 | 0 | 50.53 |
42.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Early breakthrough for Sri Lanka. Brilliantly bowled from Embuldeniya. He tosses one up around off, draws Bairstow forward as he pushes at it. The ball takes the outside edge and is dying down on the close in fielder on the off side. He though manages to hold onto it. Jonny though is not going anywhere as he takes the review. Replays roll in and it as fair catch as the big screen shows out. 131/3
Joe Root | 228 | 321 | 18 | 1 | 71.02 |
117.1 OUT! CAUGHT! It has been a fantastic innings from Joe Root! Tossed up delivery on middle, Root comes down the track and lofts it over mid-wicket but does not get the timing on it. It goes towards the fielder where Lasith Embuldeniya takes a good catch in the deep. ENGLAND ARE ALL OUT FOR 421! 421/10
Dan Lawrence | 73 | 150 | 6 | 1 | 48.66 |
85.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Finally Sri Lanka has something to cheer for! What an innings on debut from Dan Lawrence. The young man showed good cricketing skills and patience to take England stronger in the lead. Though he would be disappointed to not have got his maiden Test ton but well played in the end. Perera tossed one up around leg, Lawrence looks to fend it away awkwardly but the extra bit of bounce means that the ball catches the splice of the bat and lobs towards Kusal Mendis at short leg. Mendis this time does not make a mistake as he gets a hold of it. 304/4
Jos Buttler | 30 | 57 | 3 | 0 | 52.63 |
104.1 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! The ball change works for Sri Lanka. A fuller length ball around off, shapes away a little after pitching. Buttler looks to drive that one without any foot movement but gets an outside edge which is safely taken by the keeper to his right. Sri Lanka finally have something to cherish this morning. 372/5
Sam Curran |
1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
104.2 OUT! Knocked him over. What a first ball to Sam Curran. A fullish ball around middle and off, Curran looks to play that one with a straight bat but gets beaten by the movement and hears the rattling sound of timber. Two wickets in two balls for Fernando. He will be on a hat-trick the next ball. 372/6
Dom Bess |
4 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
106 OUT! RUN OUT! Bess departs! Floated delivery on middle, Root looks to sweep but gets it off the pads. The bowler appeals for lbw but the umpire shakes his head. The ball goes towards fine leg. Root goes for the single but Bess is not interested but still goes for it. The subsitute fielder Minod Bhanuka throws the ball at the keeper's end where Dickwella takes the bails off. Replays show that Bess was nowhere near the crease. Ultra Edge later shows that it came off the glove. 382/7
Jack Leach | 4 | 20 | 1 | 0 | 20 |
111.2 OUT! LBW! Three reds and Jack Leach has to walk back! Tossed up delivery on middle, Leach looks to defend but gets hit on the pads. The bowler appeals for lbw and the umpire raises his finger. Leach reviews it. Ultra Edge shows there is a flat line when the ball passes the bat. Ball Tracker shows that it is hitting the middle stump. 398/8
Mark Wood | 2 | 9 | 0 | 0 | 22.22 |
113.4 OUT! CAUGHT! Dilruwan Perera gets his third wicket! Flighted delivery on middle, Wood looks to sweep but gets a top edge. It goes towards the leg side where the keeper calls for it and takes a simple catch. England are 9 down now and are leading by 271 runs. How many more can they add? 406/9
