Dean Elgar | 19 | 47 | 2 | 0 | 40.42 |
c Chadd Sayers b Nathan Lyon
18 OUT! Gone! Lyon strikes! He looked threatening in the 11 balls he had bowled and provides Australia the breakthrough on the 12th. A much-needed one for the visitors. Nathan once again gives it air on middle. Elgar, seeing the flight on the delivery, shimmies down the track. He however, does not get to the pitch of it and tries to work it against the spin on the leg side, which is never a good idea. The ball takes the leading edge and lobs towards mid off. Sayers there, first takes a step or two ahead but then seeing the ball is going over him, leaps at the right time and takes it with two hands. Elgar started to walk back as soon as he had hit it. He did not even wait for the catch to be taken as he knew he was a goner. His uncomfortable stay out there ends and the Australians are ecstatic with the wicket. This is the third time in the series that the southpaw has fallen to the off spinner. 53/1

Aiden Markram | 152 | 216 | 17 | 1 | 70.37 |
c Mitchell Marsh b Pat Cummins
70.5 OUT! A wicket against the run of play. It's that man, Pat Cummins yet again. If ever there is an award for efforts, this human should get it. He lets this go on a length outside off. Markram thinks that he'd increase his tally by guiding it past gully. But all he does is spoon a catch to Mitchell Marsh at gully. The all-rounder takes it getting low to his left. Ecstasy for the touring side here. 247/3

Hashim Amla | 27 | 81 | 3 | 0 | 33.33 |
c Peter Handscomb b Pat Cummins
44.4 OUT! A wicket out of nowhere! Patrick Cummins is the bowler who has the prized scalp of Hashim Amla. He delivers it full outside off, inviting Amla to go for the drive. The bearded batter goes for the big booming drive. But the ball seems to have landed in one of the roughs outside off and then moved away. Thus, only the outside edge of Hashim's bat is taken. The ball then flies to the right of second slip. The position generally occupied by the former skipper Steven Smith belongs to Peter Handscomb today. He leaps high to his right and pulls off a good sharp catch. Yet again, the Mighty Hash gets a start and fails to carry on for long. His association with Markram ends 11 short of a triple figure. 142/2
|
|||||
AB de Villiers | 69 | 119 | 7 | 1 | 57.98 |
c Tim Paine b Chadd Sayers
83.2 OUT! Oh yes, there is a spike on Snicko! Chadd Sayers gets his first wicket and it is a huge, huge one of AB de Villiers. This is a moment he surely won't forget. He bowls a full ball around off, it shapes in. De Villiers tries to drive it straight back past the bowler but is done in by the movement. The ball seems to have taken the inside edge and goes to the keeper who takes it and appeals. The umpire raises his finger but ABD reviews straightaway. The replays roll in and it shows something on Snicko. De Villiers sees that on the big screen and he can't believe it as the decision stays. He once again fails to make it big and South Africa now have half the side back in the hut. 299/5
|
|||||
Faf du Plessis C | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
lbw b Pat Cummins
71 OUT! A golden blob for the South African captain and Cummins is on a roll at the Wanderers! He bowls this full and fast around off. Perhaps, du Plessis expects a short delivery and tries to duck. Not sure, at least that's how it seemed. But the ball was nowhere near being short and it rapped him on the front pad, courtesy a massive inswing. The appeal was just a formality as the finger was raised pretty quickly. In such cases, you should walk away but he had a chat with de Villiers about the review before being suggested otherwise. The seamer has just breathed life in this contest. Now for them to take it from here... 247/4

Kagiso Rabada | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Matt Renshaw b Chadd Sayers
83.4 OUT! One brings two and that is exactly the case here for Sayers. He gets his second in three balls. The move to send in the nightwatchman has backfired. Sayers bowls it on a length around off, he might have bent his back on this one as he gets it to bounce a touch. Rabada goes at it with hard hands but the ball hits the top part of his bat and balloons towards short mid off. Renshaw there runs to his left and takes a good diving catch. Kagiso walks back for a duck and this is a good passage of play for the Australians. Can they get one more before stumps? 299/6
|
|||||
Quinton de Kock Wk | 39 | 74 | 4 | 0 | 52.70 |
c Mitchell Marsh b Nathan Lyon
110 OUT! Lyon gets another southpaw from the opposition ranks! He doles this one on a shorter length and that makes de Kock go back to pull it. That shot is filled with risk on a track which is spin-conducive. The southpaw pays the price for that. The ball spins away a wee bit and Quinton ends up closing his bat face early. The ball lobs off the top edge towards mid on and Mitchell Marsh runs to his right and pouches it safely. End of the 85-run alliance between the keeper and Bavuma. 384/7
|
|||||
Vernon Philander | 12 | 35 | 1 | 0 | 34.28 |
c Usman Khawaja b Nathan Lyon
121.5 OUT! Lyon gets his third now! He tosses this up around off and middle, wanting Philander to go for the big shot. The batter obliges as he comes down the track and heaves it to the on side with the turn. Gets height as well as the distance but not the desired amount. There is Usman Khawaja stationed at the deep mid-wicket fence who has ample time to settle under it and take it. So, no heroics from Vernon today. 412/8
|
|||||
Keshav Maharaj | 45 | 51 | 4 | 2 | 88.23 |
c Tim Paine b Pat Cummins
136.4 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Who is the man who provides the breakthrough? It is Cummins. He gets his fourth. He bowls it wide outside off, on a shorter length. Maharaj who is going after everything, goes after it with a slash. He plays it well away from his body and gets a thick outside edge to the keeper who takes that. The Australians appeal but Maharaj starts walking even before the finger is raised. End of an entertaining knock by Maharaj and he walks off to a standing ovation. That is the end of the 76-run partnership as well. 488/9
|
|||||
Morne Morkel | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Peter Handscomb b Pat Cummins
136.5 OUT! No he can't! No hundred for Bavuma, no 500 for South Africa. Feel sorry for the little man. However, Cummins finishes with a fifer, his second in Tests and both have come at this venue. He has deserved it as he has been brilliant. He bowls it on a back of a length region around off from round the wicket. Morkel plays inside the line of the delivery but it takes the edge and goes low between first and second slip. Handscomb from the latter position, dives to his right and takes a good catch to end the South African innings at 488! Also, that's TEA ON DAY 2! 488/10

11 OUT! Just as I write that, Philander strikes. Perfect case of a commentator's curse. Once again a poor shot by an Australian batsman. That was not the best of balls bowled by Philander, he however, will take it. He comes running in and bowls it a touch fuller outside off, it swings away further. Renshaw goes after it as he tries to force it through the off side off the front foot. He plays it away from his body. The ball takes the outside edge and goes to the left of Quinton de Kock. He dives and takes a neat catch. Renshaw makes his way back to the pavilion and his return too, was not a great one. Australia in trouble now, 454 behind. 34/2

Joe Burns | 4 | 8 | 0 | 0 | 50 |
c Faf du Plessis b Kagiso Rabada
3.2 OUT! Rabada draws first blood! A poor return back into the team for Burns. A shot maybe he could have avoided. It was bowled on a length outside off, it swings away a bit. Joe tries to defend at a ball which he maybe should have left. The ball takes the outside edge and was going towards Hashim Amla at first slip. But Faf du Plessis dives in front of him from second slip and takes it reverse cup. An early strike for South Africa, just what they needed. 10/1

Usman Khawaja | 53 | 84 | 9 | 0 | 63.09 |
c Quinton de Kock b Vernon Philander
30 OUT! Eventually, Usman Khawaja departs to a terrific catch! Quinton de Kock the guy! Philander lands it on a length down leg, Khawaja looks to tickle it away to the fence and collect some runs. A tickle is all he manages. The keeper swiftly moves to his right and pouches it wonderfully in the center of his gloves. What a take that is. Not easy. One, he would be blinded by the batter's presence as he moved to his right. Two, he is standing up to the stumps to the seamer. Never easy these. He is unlucky, reckon the on-air commentators and they aren't wrong at all. It is the keeper's brilliance that has ended the southpaw's stay in the middle. The Aussies still have to score 199 to avoid the follow on. 90/4
|
|||||
Peter Handscomb | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Vernon Philander
12.1 OUT! Two-in-two for Philander! Handscomb's return to the side lasts just one ball. Also he bags his first duck in Tests. Philander bowls it on a length outside off, it shapes away. Handscomb first thinks of playing at it but then wants to withdraw his bat. He however, is late in doing so as the ball takes the inside edge and goes onto clip the leg pole. All the three batsmen who were brought back into eleven for this Test are back in the hut. South Africa are all over the Aussies here. 38/3
|
|||||
Shaun Marsh | 16 | 74 | 1 | 0 | 21.62 |
c AB de Villiers b Keshav Maharaj
34.3 OUT! Another one bites the dust. Australia are falling down like ninepins. Maharaj tosses this outside off, Shaun Marsh lunges in defense. Hard to say what he did wrong there as the next thing that happens is, the ball takes the outside edge and lands in the lap of de Villiers at slip. He takes the catch and falls back. In the first Test of the series, the elder Marsh fell in a similar manner to the same bowler. If one talks about learning from one's folly, this southpaw hasn't done that. But again, hard to think of what he could have done here. Maybe play this off the back foot. Perhaps he played inside the line expecting the ball to turn a bit more, than getting entirely to the pitch of the delivery. On closer look, it is seen that his bat stuck behind his pad for a millisecond, making it difficult for him to get to the pitch of it. Nevertheless, felicity in the hosts camp, frustration in the opposition one. 96/6

Mitchell Marsh | 4 | 10 | 1 | 0 | 40 |
b Morne Morkel
34 OUT! Shocker of a shot from Mitchell Marsh! Aussies are not yet ton-up and find half their side back in the dressing room. With about 15 minutes left in the day's play, these two had to see them off. But here's a poor stroke that brings down the all-rounder's fall. Morkel delivers this full outside off, Mitch goes for the big booming cover drive. Ends up playing this back on to his stumps. A failure for the younger Marsh, the visitors still 193 adrift of saving the follow on. 96/5
|
|||||
Tim Paine C Wk | 62 | 96 | 7 | 2 | 64.58 |
c Dean Elgar b Kagiso Rabada
70 OUT! Ho, ho, ho! What a catch by Dean Elgar! Outstanding! That is some catch. Paine comes down the track, Rabada sees it and bangs it short. Paine tries to flat-bat it but gets a top edge which goes over mid off's head. Elgar there turns, runs towards the ball, keeps his eyes on it and at the very end, he knows he cannot get there, so puts a full-stretched dive and takes it with both hands. He gets up immediately and throws it up in the air in joy. Rabada can't believe it and the smile on his face says it all. However, the celebrations are cut short because Elgar runs back into the dressing room as SOUTH AFRICA ARE NOT ENFORCING THE FOLLOW-ON! 221/10
|
|||||
Pat Cummins | 50 | 92 | 6 | 1 | 54.34 |
lbw b Keshav Maharaj
62.1 OUT! Gone, excellent use of the review. No hundred-run stand for the 7th wicket but they deserved it. A much-needed wicket for South Africa and it is Maharaj, who has taken a pounding today, who provides the breakthrough. The relief on his face says what the wicket means to him. He bowls this very full on middle, Cummins goes down on one knee in an attempt to sweep. He though, has picked the wrong ball as he seems to have missed it to get rapped on the pads. The ball lobs behind the keeper to the left. Bavuma from short leg runs towards it and takes it while the players appeal. The umpire shakes his head. Faf du Plessis, after a chat, decides to review. Replays roll in and they show there is no bat involved. So the catch is out of contention. Now, Hawk Eye shows three reds and the on-field call has to be overturned. End of a very good innings by Cummins, he fought hard out there but Australia would have hoped for him to stay longer. Has this wicket opened floodgates? The Aussies still need 94 to avoid the follow on. 195/7
|
|||||
Nathan Lyon | 8 | 18 | 2 | 0 | 44.44 |
c Dean Elgar b Kagiso Rabada
65.5 OUT! One shot too many by Lyon. Rabada once again bowls it full on off, it was there for the drive and Lyon goes for it. He however, fails to keep it down and hits it firmly towards Elgar at mid off who takes it reverse cup. Australia need another 83 to avoid the follow on but have only two wickets in hand. 206/8
|
|||||
Chadd Sayers | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Hashim Amla b Keshav Maharaj
67 OUT! Sayers bags a duck on debut, not that he was expected to score a hundred but Paine, at the other end would be disappointed with the shot. He should be looking to block and provide support to Paine but instead goes for a big slash. Maharaj drags his length back outside off, it turns wee bit and also bounces a touch more. Sayers tries to cut but does not get on top of the bounce as he balloons a catch to Amla at point who does not drop it. 9 down, the end is now nigh for Australia. 207/9

c Peter Handscomb b Pat Cummins
18.1 OUT! Cummins draws first blood, not an encore of Markram's heroics from the first essay. This Australian seamer is having a ball and this venue seems to be something that he would want to roll and take it with him forever. A maiden Test fifty to follow a fifer in the first innings, here he is giving the Australians the breakthrough. Angles this on a length from wide of the crease. The line is still outside off. Markram hangs his bat out at that to defend. All he can do is get a thick outside edge straight to Peter Handscomb at second slip. Catches don't come easier than these. The Proteas are effectively 321/1. 54/1

Dean Elgar | 81 | 250 | 10 | 1 | 32.4 |
c Shaun Marsh b Nathan Lyon
89.5 OUT! In the air... taken! A very good catch to end a gritty knock. Now there are two reasons why this catch is so good. One - there were two fielders converging for it, one from mid on and the other from covers. Two - It was a skier which is never easy to take. Now to the ball - Lyon tosses it up on off and gets it to turn away sharply. Elgar tries to go across the line and he pays the price for that mistake. The ball takes the top edge and lobs towards mid off. The fielder from mid on and from cover goes for it. Shaun Marsh from the latter position calls 'mine' at the last moment and takes a good catch. Elgar misses out on a ton and Lyon picks him up for the fourth time in this series. Once again all eyes on the dressing room whether they are being called back, no they aren't. 266/5

Hashim Amla | 16 | 48 | 1 | 0 | 33.33 |
c Mitchell Marsh b Nathan Lyon
31.3 OUT! Amla's torrid time with the bat continues. Lyon lands this one around off and middle, with the track assisting him a bit. All this while, Amla was going back and working this just past the close in fielders on the leg side. Almost does the same yet again. Just that, this time, there is a bit more bounce on this one. As a result the ball goes off the gloves to the left of Mitchell Marsh at leg slip. The all-rounder dives to his left and takes it safely. A look to triumph on Lyon's face adds weight to Nicholas' assessment earlier. The bearded Hash fails to set the stage on fire with a tall score. The hosts' lead is 346. 79/2
|
|||||
AB de Villiers | 6 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 120 |
c Tim Paine b Pat Cummins
34.2 OUT! Cummins, you are the one, exclaims an Aussie supporter here! When AB de Villiers is skittled out pretty cheaply, such a comment is ought to be heard somewhere. The pacer delivers this on a length just outside off. AB looks to slap this through the off side. But as has been happening on an odd occasion, this delivery jumps up a bit more after landing. The batter is unable to account for that and before he could even think of doing something, the ball takes the gloves and goes towards the keeper. Paine leaps to his right and takes that gleefully. He knows the value of this wicket. 94/3

88.4 OUT! The long innings ends! Cummins bowls it on a length outside off, du Plessis looks to defend it away from the body. This one bounces a bit more and takes the outside edge. It flies to the right of second slip and Handscomb takes it with a dive. The skipper walks out to a standing ovation. It is worthwhile to remember that he didn't walk into the innings on the back of the best of forms. All eyes are on whether Elgar walks back with him, but no. The declaration doesn't come. The lead reads 531. 264/4

De Kock goes for the flick shot but misses and is hit on the pads. The players appeal and the umpire raises his finger immediately. De Kock reviews immediately. They go upstairs and replays show three reds. De Kock has been given his marching orders and Cummins gets his fourth. Another fifer at this venue? 273/6

12.4 OUT! Last match, first wicket! Side strain? What's that? The Giraffe has struck! Bowled fuller on the stumps from round the wicket, Renshaw misses the flick and is caught adjacent to the stumps. Morkel knows it as he appeals and the umpire raises the finger. Matt has a chat with his partner about the review before walking back on the insistence of Burns. So, after bowling three deliveries outside off, the one in line of the stumps gets success for Morne. Hawk Eye confirms that the on-field umpire has got it right. 21/1

Joe Burns | 42 | 80 | 5 | 1 | 52.5 |
lbw b Morne Morkel
24.1 OUT! The legend of Morne Morkel would live on if he, all by himself, hastens Australia's end today. He runs in and spears it full on middle and leg. In a bid to flick it away, Burns gets overbalanced and misses. Gets hit on the pad, that looks to be in front of the stumps. Ian Gould agrees. Burns has a chat with Handscomb but doesn't get the nod to get it reviewed. That ends a good knock from the opener. Because of getting beaten outside off on a few occasions, he had taken a different guard and was standing more towards the off side. Perhaps he wasn't prepared for one on the pads, just what the gentle giant dished out. The tourists are still 544 runs away... 68/3

|||||
Usman Khawaja | 7 | 12 | 1 | 0 | 58.33 |
lbw b Keshav Maharaj
17.2 OUT! What a decision this has been! It is deemed that Khawaja didn't offer a shot and hence the on-field call stays. Australia lose Khawaja as well as a review. Maharaj tosses this one outside off, it spins in sharply from the rough. Khawaja moves back and across and ends up being well outside off. He has his bat behind the pad and the ball turns and catches him on the front pad. The Proteas appeal and Nigel Llong raises the dreaded finger. Khawaja cannot believe it and signals to take it upstairs. Also, he signals to the umpire that he played a shot. To that the umpire said that he didn't. Now, over to the DRS process. The Hawk Eye is rolled in and, although the impact was well outside off, the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps. Hence, the TV umpire returns the decision in the hosts' favour. Even as Usman makes the walk back, Burns is seen talking something with the umpire. Maybe, it is related to the offering of shot. Well, now this could boil down to the single that was refused to him on the previous ball... 34/2

Peter Handscomb | 24 | 44 | 4 | 0 | 54.54 |
b Vernon Philander
34.4 OUT! DRAGGED ON! An action replay of the way Handscomb got out in the first innings. Once again it is Philander who gets him. His third in this innings and all three have come today. It is also his 50th wicket against the Aussies. Doesn't he love bowling against them? Well, he is certainly showing it here. He bowls this one on a length and around off. Handscomb at first tries to play at it. But the ball just about moves away late. Peter tries to withdraw his bat at the very last moment but is very late in doing so. The ball takes the inner half of the bat and once again hits the leg pole. The South Africans have ran through the middle order already and now will hope to make quick work of the lower order. Something which they have not been able to do in this series. 95/6

30.1 OUT! What a start, what a start. A wicket off the first ball. We saw a wicket falling of the first ball of Day 5 in the Test between NZ and ENG and we have the same here. Philander starts off right on the money as he comes running in and lands it on a length around middle. The ball comes in late after pitching. Marsh does not account for it as he tries to defend it off the front foot. The ball takes the inside edge, hits the pads and lobs towards gully where Bavuma takes a simple catch. Philander is up and running in celebration and the umpire raises his finger. Wicket number 199 for him. South Africa are now 6 wickets away. 88/4

c Quinton de Kock b Vernon Philander
30.4 OUT! No. 200 for Philander! It has been EDGED AND TAKEN! Two wickets in the over and the hosts are just 5 away now. This is outstanding from Vern. He got the elder Marsh with an inswinger and now gets the younger one with an outswinger. On a length around off, it swings away a touch, Mitchell Marsh is rooted inside his crease as he tries to defend. The ball takes the outside edge and goes to the right of Quinton de Kock who accepts it. The all-rounder walks back for a duck. Are we in for an early finish here? 88/5

c Quinton de Kock b Vernon Philander
38.5 OUT! Is that the final nail in the coffin now? One would surely feel so as Tim Paine makes his way back. Another excellent delivery by Philander. He gets his fourth for just three runs this morning. He is breathing fire out there. On a length around off, this one also shapes away and also bounces a touch extra. Paine is half forward as he tries to defend and the ball takes the outside edge and goes into the mitts of de Kock who won't drop these. He takes it with a dive to his right. The end now is nigh for Australia. 99/7

b Vernon Philander
40.1 OUT! Make that 5 for 3! 13th Test fifer for Vernon. This guy has been outstanding today. He has worked Cummins out brilliantly here. He kept bowling the outswinger and this time does not make it swing. Cummins falls in the trap as he tries to leave the ball which is on off, thinking it will swing away. The ball however, goes straight on and hits the off pole. Two wickets away now are South Africa. 100/8

Nathan Lyon | 9 | 23 | 1 | 0 | 39.13 |
run out (Aiden Markram)
46.4 OUT! This is what happens when the last pair is out there. Often there's always a run out around the corner. Lyon punches this one through covers and thinks there's two there. Ambles across for the second run. Du Plessis chases it down from covers returns a good flat throw to de Kock, who collects it and whips off the bails. Doesn't seem too confident even as the appeal is made and taken upstairs. The first replay confirms doom as Nathan is just short of his crease. Joy begins for South Africa AS THEY WIN BY 492 RUNS. 119/10

c Dean Elgar b Vernon Philander
40.2 OUT! GONE! Two-in-two for Philander and he is now on a hat-trick. Make that one wicket away! This guy is creating havoc here with those outswingers. He gets his sixth. Fuller in length on off, the ball shapes away. Sayers goes for the booming drive but the swing does him in. It takes the outside edge and goes towards Elgar at third slip who takes it. A pair for Sayers on debut and South Africa can now wrap it up quickly. 100/9
