Cooper Connolly

Cooper Connolly, is an emerging Australian cricketer known for his all-round abilities as a left-handed batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler. Representing Western Australia in interstate cricket and the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, Connolly has quickly established himself as one of the most promising young talents in Australian cricket.

Connolly's leadership qualities became evident early in his career when he was appointed captain of the Australia Under-19 team for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His captaincy was further highlighted by his role as the leader of the Western Australia Under-17 cricket team, demonstrating his ability to inspire and lead from the front. His performances on the field were equally impressive, with his tactical acumen and skillset drawing attention from domestic and international scouts alike.

In August 2022, Connolly was signed by the Perth Scorchers for the 2022–23 Big Bash League season, marking the beginning of his professional T20 career. He made his debut for the Scorchers on 7 January 2023 against Brisbane Heat, and his contribution in the final was crucial, scoring 25 runs off just 11 balls to help secure the Scorchers’ victory, showcasing his composure and ability to perform in high-pressure situations.

His List A debut came later that year on 24 September 2023, when he represented Western Australia in the 2023–24 Marsh One-Day Cup against Queensland. Connolly's growth as a cricketer was further exemplified by his first-class debut for Western Australia in the 2023–24 Sheffield Shield final against Tasmania, where he scored a solid 90 runs in the first innings, signalling his potential to excel in the longer format of the game.

In July 2024, Connolly’s rapid rise was rewarded with a call-up to Australia’s T20I squad for their upcoming tour of England and Scotland. He made his T20I debut against Scotland on 7 September 2024, before earning his first ODI cap on 29 September 2024 in a match against England.

In January 2025, Cooper earned a call-up to Australia's Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. Ahead of the second Test, he received his Baggy Green from former all-rounder Simon Katich, officially becoming the 471st player to represent Australia in Test cricket. As a dynamic young player with a natural flair for both batting and bowling, Connolly’s future in international cricket looks bright.

Following his Test debut in Galle in early 2025, Connolly continued his rapid international development by being named in the Australian squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where he featured in the semi-final against India. In August 2025, he achieved a significant milestone during an ODI series against South Africa, taking 5/22 to become the youngest Australian bowler to record a five-wicket haul in the format. He followed this with a career-best ODI score of 61 against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground later that October.

Connolly's domestic and franchise career also reached new heights as he was signed by the Punjab Kings for INR 3 crore at the IPL mini-auction in December 2025. In BBL 15, he played a vital role in the Perth Scorchers' record-extending sixth Big Bash League title, finishing the tournament with 209 runs and an economy rate of 6.40. His performances earned him the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award.

By February 2026, Connolly was an established member of the national setup, participating in Australia's 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. The T20 World Cup was followed by another major step in Connolly's development when he made his IPL debut for Punjab Kings in 2026. He made an immediate impact, finishing the campaign with 491 runs in 14 matches, including a maiden IPL century - an unbeaten 107 from 59 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His aggressive left-handed batting established him as a key member of Punjab's middle order and further underlined his value as a versatile all-rounder.

His international stock continued to rise during Australia's tour of Bangladesh in June 2026. Connolly produced a maiden ODI century, smashing 149 in the third ODI, and finished the series as a key contributor with both bat and ball. The performances underlined his growing importance to Australia's limited-overs plans and gave further weight to his credentials as a genuine all-round option rather than simply a part-time spin-bowling batter.

Connolly was again part of Australia's ODI plans for the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa, with the selectors viewing the series as important preparation for the 2027 World Cup. He was subsequently recalled to the Test squad for the South Africa tour, putting him back in contention for a longer-term role in Australia's red-ball setup. Chief selector George Bailey has also identified Connolly as a potential middle-order option as Australia looks towards the next phase of its Test side.
