Right then! That ends an exciting tri-series. Not many would have predicted that at the start, but Zimbabwe played really well to prove everyone wrong. They will look to use this as a stepping stone for future games. West Indies will be disappointed on failing three times in a row to close out games from a winning position while Sri Lanka will be happy with the way their newbies played.
Victorious Sri Lankan captain, UPUL THARANGA is happy with the winning moment. Credits his team for the win. He admits that there was some nervousness when they lost three quick wickets but they also knew that they needed just one good partnership and himself and Mendis achieved that. Praises the new guys in his team and also the support staff. On the upcoming tour of South Africa, he honestly says that it will be a difficult series and his team needs to work harder.
KUSAL MENDIS HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH AND SERIES. Says that he is very happy. Adds that the pitch was very good to bat upon and his team bowled very well. Further says that he enjoyed this series as this is his first Man Of The Series award.
Zimbabwean skipper, GRAEME CREMER says that he is happy with the fact of having made it to the final but is disappointed with the result. Admits that it was difficult to bat and they lost too many wickets upfront. Praises the debutant Musakanda and is impressed with Vitori's pace. Feels that the team spirit is up and there is the hunger to win. Thanks the crowd for turning up and supporting his team.
It was a different story for the home side with the bat today. There was no fairy tale. Cremer chose to bat under overcast conditions, with the hope that his team can make use of the slowness of the pitch in the afternoon but his batsmen could not survive against the Lankan bowling. There was a brief 53-run stand for the third wicket between Musakanda and Ervine but once the latter was dismissed, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals, ending up with a below-par total. Stay tuned for the post-match presentation.
A totally forgettable match for Zimbabwe, given the series that they have had. 160 was just too less a total to defend and the bowlers were not able to create the impact they had in the previous matches. Cremer was economical but the rest were not that impressive after Vitori's early burst.
The comeback man, Brian Vitori, made his presence felt. He struck thrice in the first 6 overs and for a moment it seemed like Sri Lanka were under pressure. But Kusal Mendis and Upul Tharanga calmed the nerves. The former went on a bit of a counter-attack and got the field spread while the skipper ensured that there was no more loss of wickets. The duo staged a 75-run stand for the 4th wicket which nearly sealed the game. Tharanga went on to get his half century to get something noteworthy for himself from this series.
Comprehensive win for Sri Lanka. The result was never in doubt after they bowled Zimbabwe out for 160, but a few cheap wickets early on did give some hopes to the home side.
