That's all from this game. It is Sri Lanka who came out on top in a very convincing fashion. On the other hand, Oman had the chance to seal a spot in the next stage with a win but they were outplayed by a strong Sri Lankan side. The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers action continues on Saturday, the 24th of June as well with two games in store. It will be Zimbabwe taking on West Indies and the Netherlands will lock horns with Nepal. Both games will begin at 12.30 pm IST (7.00 am GMT). As always you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, says that the intent from the bowlers was brilliant and that helped the team get over the line. Adds that they did not take anything lightly and feels that they played better today. Mentions that Wanindu Hasaranga is a champion bowler and it feels great to have such a player in the side. Adds that a victory as such is morale-boosting and a nice one to move ahead. Closes by saying that the management has helped a lot to keep our heads in the right place.
Zeeshan Maqsood, the skipper of Oman, says that it feels proud to play against Sri Lanka and the team has learned a lot from them. Adds that the game was lost in the first Powerplay as they lost too many wickets. Also adds that the team is well-tested now and it will help the side move further ahead. Closes by saying that the team has to hold their heads high and take this game as a learning curve. Mentions that it was unfortunate for Ayaan Khan not to get a half-century as he batted really well.
Wanindu Hasaranga is the Player of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance. He had figures of 5 for 13 including two maidens. He says this is a very good wicket to bowl for a leggie and he tried to aim at stumps and that worked out brilliantly. Adds that the pacers bowled very well in nice areas and that was the reason for his late introduction today. Also adds that such tracks and games will help the side to prepare for the ODI World Cup to be played in India.
Time for the presentations....
Earlier in the game, after Dasun Shanaka won the toss and put Oman into bat in overcast conditions, the Oman openers had a tough job in front of them of negotiating the first hour. The new ball pairing of Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara were on the money right from the start and did not allow the two openers to settle in. Oman could never get going and found themselves four wickets down inside the first Powerplay. Ayaan Khan and Jatinder Singh did well to steady the sinking ship of Oman with a 52-run stand. Once the partnership was broken, Oman lost their way and were rolled over for 98 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga was once again the star of the show for Sri Lanka with figures of 5 for 13 from 7.2 overs. Lahiru Kumara accounted for three wickets while Kasun Rajitha had a wicket to his name as well.
On the other hand, Oman were riding high on confidence courtesy of back-to-back wins but they have been handed a crushing defeat by Sri Lanka here. As it was the first case in the first innings, Oman's seamer Bilal Khan and Fayyaz Butt did get the ball to swing but were unable to keep it tight against the two Sri Lankan openers. They even resorted to short-pitch stuff but even that failed to reward them with a wicket. Zeeshan Maqsood brought spinners into the attack but with they were unable to work their magic. To be honest, it has been a forgetful game for Oman and they will look to put this game behind them as they move forward in the competition.
Sri Lanka have absolutely steamrolled their way to victory here! It has been a job well done for Dasun Shanaka and Co. as they have dominated with both bat and ball. In their pursuit of a very modest total, Sri Lanka were off to a solid start. The two openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne worked the ball in the gaps and were quick to pounce on the loose deliveries. Neither of the batters did get bogged down and kept the scoreboard ticking. Karunratne notched up his fourth consecutive ODI fifty and stitched a 100-run opening stand with his partner Pathum Nissanka to take his side over the line. With this comprehensive victory, Sri Lanka go top of Group B.
