That's a wrap to this entertaining game. Get ready for a double-header on Saturday. Mumbai will be facing Rajasthan at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT), and Gujarat will take on Delhi at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Do join us in advance for the build-up. Cheers!
Umesh Yadav (4-1-23-4) is the Player of the Match! The speedster says that hard work is needed as he needs to keep pushing and he will keep working hard. Mentions that he keeps bowling different balls in the nets so that he can bowl them in the game. Shares that he was surprised after Mayank gave him the charge on the first ball but later on, he knew Agarwal would wait on the back foot. Tells that the plan was to bowl full. States that he looks to bowl the right lines and lengths at pace.
Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Kolkata, says that they were stunned by the counter-attacking batting from Punjab in the Powerplay but he thought that they can also do the same. Adds that they got early wickets and after the Powerplay, his mindset was to keep bowling the main bowlers and go for the wickets. Praises both the spinners for doing the holding job. Mentions that Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy come with their own strategy which is really helpful. Regarding Andre Russell's knock, Shreyas replies that it was such a relief to see him bat and he turned the game around. On Umesh Yadav's bowling, Iyer says that he is getting stronger and fitter with age. Shares that he has been putting in the hard yards and is hungry to perform.
The man of the moment, Andre Russell comes up for a chat. The Jamaican says that he is feeling awesome and this is why he plays the game. Tells that Billings played really well and he backed his ability and he is happy to take the team over the line. Adds that he is happy to do what the team wants him to do and further says that they have a good bowling depth and have a few who can slip in a couple of overs. Says they were a few wickets down with not a lot to come, so he needed to bat long with Sam Billings. States that he decided to take charge as the left-arm spinner (Harpreet Brar) was not turning the ball. Shares that the plan was to cautiously bat against Chahar as he was getting the ball to turn. Regarding how many shots did he time from the middle of the bat, Russell is honest enough to say that just one came from the middle.
Mayank Agarwal, the captain of Punjab, says they did not bat well enough but they showed a good fight with the ball and admits that Russell took the game away from them. He feels 170 would have been a good total on this surface. Mentions that they started off well but they could not capitalize. Feels that a game like this at the start is fine. Mentions the bowlers did well to pull things back but Russell was the difference.
Stay tuned for some interviews...
Early in the evening, Punjab managed just 137 on the board. They were in tatters after losing wickets in a heap and surrendered in front of Umesh Yadav and company. Shreyas Iyer impressed one and all with his captaincy and certainly, there were shades of Brendon McCullum in the way he led. They would have loved to be more clinical in the chase but then we would have been robbed of a masterclass of power-hitting from Andre Russell.
Kolkata were after a below-par target and started strongly in the Powerplay despite losing both the openers. Rahul Chahar's magical over where he hunted down two wickets sent jitters in the Kolkata camp but Sam Billings and Andre Russell joined forces and did the job efficiently. They took their time initially, respected the spinners for a while and then Dre Russ decided to go bonkers. He attacked Harpreet Brar's over as a starter and then went hammer and tongs in the 12th over bowled by Odean Smith. 30 runs came in it and the chase was put to bed.
Crash! Bang! Wallop! Wrestlemania is on the 2nd of April but 'Russell-mania' arrived one day in advance! Some brutal hitting from the Jamaican decimated the bowling of Punjab and shattered the little ray of hope they had of a comeback. Phew, that was one batting show from Dre Russ, incredible hitting, 70 off only 31 balls - studded with two brutal fours and 8 humongous biggies. Take a bow, big man!
