Right then, that is it from this game and Australia zoom into the semifinals on the back of a win just like South Africa did in their last game and those two will now be waiting for each other in a few days' time. There are still a couple of matches left in the group stage of this competition, one of them is going on right now. England have set Pakistan a target of 338 runs in Kolkata and you can catch our coverage of the enticing run chase by simply switching tabs. Cheers!
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia says it feels great to take the winning feeling into the semis. Mentions that this was a really good wicket and he is not too upset with anything. Adds that it feels good to have all 15 available and in form to pick anyone on any given day. On the innings of Mitchell Marsh, he says that the most satisfying thing was the way he ended the game and stood there. Also adds that it feels good to win 7 in a row and the team is on a high and would looking to go all the way.
Bangladesh skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto says that the two run-outs were a very crucial moment as they lost their momentum. He adds that if they could score 340-350 runs, things might turn to their side but they had to do good with their bowling. He also says that they are going to rectify their mistakes from the World Cup and work on it. Adds that there are a few positives also like the batting of Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan too had a good World Cup but it is not about individual performances, so they will look back at all nine matches and will improve.
Mitchell Marsh is the Player of the Match for his stellar ton. He says that it feels great to wrap up the group stage with a win and advance to the semis. Adds that he backed himself and that's the way he loves to play cricket. Also adds that with Travis Head coming in he had to play at three and tick the box in a pressure situation and he did well but he also feels that he had not played well and as per his liking in a few games in the middle but this is what he would like to play like going ahead as well. Mentions that it has been a tough week with the personal issues and a lot of traveling but it feels good to progress with a winning momentum. Mentions that the match against South Africa would be a cracker and he just can't wait for that game to begin.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Pat Cummins won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first on a wicket that looked excellent for batting. Bangladesh were happy to bat first and got off to a flier of a start against the likes of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins but it was Sean Abbott who drew first blood for Australia and then Adam Zampa took control of the middle phase. Bangladesh batters all got off to starts but threw their wickets away and a couple of big run-outs really hurt them. Towhid Hridoy though played a lovely knock of 71 and a cameo from Mehidy Hasan down the order took them over the 300-run mark. Coming to the chase, after losing an early wicket, Australia never looked back and Mitchell Marsh almost single-handedly battered the Bangladeshi bowling attack to seal the win for Australia.
Bangladesh's World Cup campaign has ended with a seventh defeat but a solid batting performance earlier in the game has all but secured a Champions Trophy place for them. Having put on a decent total on the board, they would have expected a better showing with the ball but they have rather been treated to a thrashing. Taskin Ahmed bowled well up top and got an early wicket as well but the spinners remained largely ineffective. Mahedi Hasan was fairly economical but the likes of Mehidy Hasan and Nasum Ahmed were dealt with ease. Mustafizur Rahman had to bowl the difficult overs and he too went for a bit like everyone else. In the end, they simply didn't create enough wicket-taking opportunities and were put away with ease.
SEVENTH HEAVEN FOR AUSTRALIA! They have successfully chased down their highest-ever total in World Cups and have done so with utmost ease. Needing 307 for the win, Australia needed a quick start but lost Travis Head very early. Mitchell Marsh came out with aggressive intent and got away a few quick boundaries while David Warner started to get into his groove at the other end as well and racked up a fifty. The pair put on a 120-run stand to put Australia in cruise control before Warner got out. Marsh kept battling through a bit of cramp and powered his way to a sensational hundred. Steven Smith played a nice anchored innings at the other end and even brought up his half-century. Marsh though was the star, hitting 9 sixes en route to an unbeaten 177 off just 132 balls with the stand between him and Smith remaining unbeaten on 175 runs. A very, very strong performance from the resurgent Aussies.
