India beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs
That's a wrap - Despite the win, India remain 5th in the WTC standings, with their points percentage now at 53.33, while Sri Lanka stay 6th with 33.33. At the moment, Australia are at the top of the table, with South Africa in 2nd. Sri Lanka can no longer win this series, but they will hope to deny India a series win in the second Test in Colombo at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, starting on Sunday, 23rd August. That game will begin at 4.30 am GMT (10 am IST). There is plenty of Test action to follow in the meantime, with England and Pakistan facing each other in the first Test later today at 10 am GMT (3.30 pm IST), while the second Test between Australia and Bangladesh will begin on Saturday, 22nd August. Until then, take care and goodbye.
The skipper of India - Shubman Gill says it is a special feeling to win India’s 600th Test. Admits that Sri Lanka put them under some pressure at times, but his side responded well. When asked whether batting is a concern given how India’s second innings unfolded, Gill says it is not an issue for the team. Explains that the aim in the third innings was to build a lead of around 400, but the wicket was not easy to score on, and in their search for quick runs, they lost wickets. Feels Suthar has been bowling magnificently and looks like a very promising player who can serve India for a long time. On Padikkal, Gill says it was great to watch him turn his hundred into a big score in the first innings and then continue to dominate in the second innings. On India’s WTC ambitions, Gill says reaching the final is the ultimate goal. He adds that Test wins do not come easy, making this victory all the more satisfying.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Devdutt Padikkal takes home the award, scoring 167 in the first innings and following it up with 44 in the second dig. He reflects on the spread of venues he has featured at, starting in Dharamsala, then Perth, and now Galle. Says he couldn't have asked for anything better and feels great to contribute to the team. On the surface, Padikkal says it showed natural wear and tear as the match wore on, calling it a great Test wicket that played well across all five days, though it began turning noticeably more from day three onward. Ultimately, he feels it came down to which side executed their skills better, and India did exactly that. On being asked why left-handers seemed to have more joy than the right-handed batters, he says it wasn't really a deliberate pattern, more a byproduct of the match being dominated by left-arm spin. On a wicket this slow, he explains, left-handers simply found it easier to negotiate that particular threat than right-handers did.
The captain of Sri Lanka - Dhananjaya de Silva feels Sri Lanka fought hard throughout the Test, particularly from Day 2 onwards. He says the pitch was good to bat on for the first three days, but the fourth innings was always going to be difficult. He points to KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal’s partnership on the opening day as a key difference.
Time for the presentation ceremony, which is taking place indoors due to the rain.
Patience pays off - With 288 still needed at the start of the day and 6 wickets in hand, it was a long road ahead for Sri Lanka. The target was always going to be a huge ask, so the focus was on taking it one step at a time. Dhananjaya and Sonal Dinusha gave Sri Lanka a steady start to Day 5, but India remained patient, resisted the temptation to go searching for wickets and waited for the mistakes to come. And eventually, they did. The first came from the Lankan skipper, followed by another from Niroshan Dickwella, leaving Dinusha to fight it out with the tail. His resistance eventually came to an end, and with it went Sri Lanka’s last realistic hope of saving the Test.
Up against it - In the second dig, the challenge for the home side grew even tougher when Dinesh Chandimal was ruled out with a concussion, and his replacement Pasindu Sooriyabandara fell for a golden duck. Sri Lanka soon found themselves reduced to 47/4 late on Day 4. It could have been worse had Jadeja managed to keep his foot behind the line when Dhananjaya de Silva edged one to slip, and that meant the Lankan skipper lived to fight another day.
Building on the lead - India had a healthy lead and the chance to take the game completely away from Sri Lanka, but their second innings was not as straightforward. Sri Lanka kept picking up wickets and made India work for their runs. Padikkal and Rahul got starts but could not convert them, but it was Rishabh Pant who provided the spark. After Pant fell, the tourists could not add much, but the work done in the first innings meant they still managed to set Sri Lanka 372 for an unlikely win.
A fightback from 90/5 - Sri Lanka’s reply got off to a shaky start as India’s bowlers kept the pressure on and reduced them to 90/5. Just when it looked like it could get ugly pretty quickly, Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella put together a crucial 146-run partnership. Dickwella’s 80 and Dinusha’s maiden Test century helped the hosts avoid the follow-on. India still secured a 178-run lead, but the home side had at least managed to prevent the damage from becoming far worse.
Where it all began - After Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bat, India steadily took control as Sri Lanka never quite settled with the ball on the opening day. In the absence of Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal grabbed his opportunity with both hands at number 3, scoring his maiden Test hundred and going on to make 167. KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also chipped in with valuable contributions as India piled on 462.
Reflecting on the win - KL Rahul says they are very relieved to get the win. Admits that they kept looking overhead at the clouds, as there was a bit of rain predicted later in the day. When he is asked whether the margin of victory was as comfortable as it appeared, he firstly calls it a genuinely great Test match, one played on a pitch that held up well across all five days. He notes there was something in it for the spinners, but also that batters who applied themselves properly could still score. He points to Sri Lanka's Sonal Dinusha as an example, someone who batted beautifully with a clear plan to work the spinners and use his feet. He adds that those who committed fully to a game plan generally found runs, and that seeing fast bowlers contribute wickets too, for both sides, made this an especially satisfying Test to be part of. On being asked whether India were banking on the second new ball during the Dinusha-Nuwantha stand, Rahul says the team knew the new ball would come and that it would be their next best option if wickets weren't forthcoming before that. But adds the mindset throughout the day was simply to keep hitting the right areas. India's approach, he says, was to stay patient and trust that once one partnership broke, two or three wickets would tend to follow in a cluster. On the lack of big individual scores in the match, he calls it a genuinely good Test wicket to bat on, one that rewarded batters who walked out with a clear plan for handling spin or pace. He contrasts that with those who went in hoping to figure things out once they got there, suggesting those were the ones who struggled given there was assistance in the pitch from the very start. He points out that most dismissals came inside the first 15 to 20 balls of an innings, which he feels tells the whole story. And just as the interview concludes, the heavens open up.
India go 1-0 up - In a crucial two-match series in the WTC final race, Shubman Gill’s men have taken the first step with a win in the country's 600th Test. Sri Lanka were playing catch-up for most of the game, and while they showed glimpses of a fight, India always had an answer.

Manav Suthar To Keshara Nuwantha OUT!
OUT! BOWLED! Suthar, fittingly, wraps it up in style, capping off an impressive 6-wicket haul in the process. He also completes a 10-for in this Test, having picked four wickets in the first innings. Sharing the attack with two far more experienced spinners, he has been the standout performer on a Galle surface that offered precious little in return. INDIA WIN BY 165 RUNS and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Coming to the ball, Suthar drops it short and around off. Nuwantha goes back to defend, but the ball comes back in, sneaking through the gap between bat and pad before crashing into off stump.

Ravindra Jadeja To Asitha Fernando
Another prolonged appeal for caught behind, but Ahsan Raza stays unmoved. The players around the bat seem to have heard something, but India have burnt all their reviews. Spins away from the batter after drifting in. Asitha Fernando is sucked on the front foot to defend, but the ball spins square and beats the outside edge. UltraEdge shows a flat line. A spike does appear, but that is when the bat hits the ground.

Ravindra Jadeja To Keshara Nuwantha
A much more convincing appeal for LBW this time around, but the finger stays down. Shubman Gill has taken the review. Darts in a full ball, Nuwantha brings his bat out in front to stab it down but seems to have squeezed out an inside edge onto the front pad. The replays suggest so, and the on-field decision is upheld. India lose their last review.

Manav Suthar To Lahiru Kumara OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND CAUGHT! A game-sealing over from Suthar. Triple whammy for him as he completes a well-deserved 5-wicket haul. The second of his very brief Test career. Tossed up, full and outside off, at 93 kph. Kumara lunges forward to defend but plays for the turn, but the ball goes on with the arm. He gets the faintest outside edge, and Pant collects safely to his left behind the stumps. A prolonged appeal for caught behind and up goes the finger. Kumara walks off without bothering to review. Sri Lanka are 199/9, with India just one wicket away from victory.

Manav Suthar To Prabath Jayasuriya OUT!
OUT! TIMBER! Just too good for a number 9. This is speared in from around the wicket, short in length in line with the off stump. Prabath Jayasuriya stays back to defend, but the ball lands and straightens off the deck to whistle past the outside edge, and it clatters into the off pole. Two in two for Suthar and he is on a hat-trick now. India need 2 more wickets for the win.
A warm applause for Sonal Dinusha as he trudges off. A magnificent ton in the first innings, and he backed it up with a defiant 84. India are now 3 wickets away from winning. Prabath Jayasuriya is in at number 9.

Manav Suthar To Sonal Dinusha OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! The fight from Sonal Dinusha is over, and with him goes Sri Lanka’s hopes of avoiding defeat in this Test. This is tossed up from around the wicket with a leg gully in place. Dinusha lunges to tuck it away, but the ball spins back with a bit of bounce to catch the inside edge. It clips the pads before going straight into the waiting hands of Dhruv Jurel at leg gully, who is present under the helmet. He crouches and gobbles it up. End of a top effort in this Test by Dinusha.
The second new ball is still 5 overs away for India.

Welcome back, folks. Skies remain clear over Galle with the sun shining nice and bright. The Indian team is in a huddle near the ropes. Now, they spread out. Shubman Gill has not come out, and in his absence, KL Rahul will be captaining India for now. Sarfaraz Khan is in as the substitute for Gill. With Sri Lanka under the pump, Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha walk to the crease to resume their partnership, which is now worth 19 runs. Kuldeep Yadav will get us underway with the first over of the session. Here we go...
... DAY 5, SESSION 2 ...
Agenda set for the day ahead - India are almost there, though four wickets still stand between them and victory. Dinusha looks completely unbothered by whatever's unfolding at the other end, and his job now is to shepherd the tail through as long as possible. India, for their part, will be desperate to snuff out any hint of a wag before it gets going, and wrap this up without dragging things into the final session. The post-Lunch session is scheduled to start at 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm IST). Join us then.
Successful in creating inroads - Sonal Dinusha continued his fine run with the bat, showing once again that knack he has for anchoring an innings and building partnerships. And that is an invaluable currency in this format. Jadeja probed away for India, extracting a couple of half chances here and there. But it took the Indians well over an hour to finally make the breakthrough, with Jadeja removing Dhananjaya de Silva and putting an end to a defiant 95-run stand. Niroshan Dickwella, whether in a rush of blood or simply a lapse of concentration, threw his wicket away, and Sri Lanka slipped from 142/4 to 156/5 as a result, with Dinusha stranded on 65.
Stubborn in defence - The pitch still looked in decent shape, with not too many indentations to speak of, and the first hour was negotiated safely by Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya, both rock solid in defence throughout. The Indian bowlers, for their part, kept probing away with disciplined lines and lengths, content to wait for the batters to err rather than force the issue themselves. And every so often, the cracks did show, the odd forced stroke offering a glimpse of the vulnerabilities lurking just around. But the two Sri Lankans just stayed rock solid, showing great temperament.
6.32 am GMT (12.02 pm IST) - 33 overs, 91 runs and 2 wickets in the morning session. India will surely be the happier of the two teams. While the partnership between Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal was going on, it seemed India would have a long day, but with those couple of quick wickets, India are in the driver’s seat again. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have displayed good resistance, especially through Dinusha, but will have a lot of hard work to do in the post-lunch session, as they are running out of men now.

Prasidh Krishna To Niroshan Dickwella OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! One brings two for India quickly and they smell blood now. Digs it in short, veering down leg. Dickwella is caught off guard, still adjusting his feet as the ball arrives towards him. He backs away toward the leg side, badly misjudging the length, and by the time he realises how close it actually is, there's no room left to free his arms to access the off side. As a result, the outside edge carries all the way through to the keeper as Pant takes a regulation catch. Krishna has dismissed Dickwella both times in this Test. Sri Lanka slip from 142/4 to 156/6, needing another 216 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja To Dhananjaya de Silva OUT!
OUT! RELIEF FOR INDIA! The bowling change works like a charm for India. Dhananjaya de Silva was caught at slip yesterday off Jadeja’s bowling, but the celebrations were cut short as he had overstepped. This time, though, Jadeja has his foot well behind the line. At 89.6 kph, full and just outside off. Dhananjaya de Silva goes for the paddle sweep but the ball seemingly pops up a bit, and he can only find a top edge. As a result, the ball bobbles straight up and Manav Suthar at short fine leg gets underneath it and completes a routine catch. Sri Lanka are 142/5 as the captain falls. They need 230 more runs to win.

DRINKS BREAK! So far, so good for Sri Lanka. The first hour was always going to be crucial, and they have negotiated it without losing a wicket. The story of this game has continued with the softer, older ball not offering the same bite and zip off the surface. Patience will be the name of the game for India. Teams can get desperate and start searching for wickets, but that is exactly what the visitors need to avoid. The key will be to keep stringing good balls together, build pressure and wait for the mistake to come.

SIX! FIFTY IN STYLE FOR SONAL DINUSHA! Another excellent batting display from the young man. Appreciated by the coach and the entire Sri Lankan squad. This has been a genuinely composed innings throughout. Drops it fuller in length, around the off stump. Sonal Dinusha latches onto it and nails the slog sweep behind deep mid-wicket for a biggie. The partnership is now worth 91, and Sri Lanka need 234 runs.

Fired on a fuller length, on leg. Sonal Dinusha advances down the track and flicks it to deep mid-wicket for a single.
All in readiness for the final day's action to commence. Bright sunshine and blue skies greet the two umpires and players as they make their way out to the middle. Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha have their work cut out. Ravindra Jadeja will get the day underway with the ball. Dinusha is on strike. There is a slip, a leg slip and a short leg in place with Jadeja starting from around the wicket. Let's play...
PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is down near the pitch. Informs that it is a steamy morning in Galle, so the weather will be something to keep an eye on throughout the day. Mentions that the covers were taken off only a short while ago, and he believes that this is a very different-looking Day 5 Galle surface than usual. Shares that normally, the rough patches start to appear around the full-length areas on either end of the pitch, but here, there are plenty of indentations around a good length, right in line with the stumps. That makes it particularly tricky for the batters, as the ball can behave unpredictably and leave them constantly guessing.
WEATHER - Bright and sunny is what we are hearing about the overhead conditions in Galle, for now. The radar, though, tells a slightly different story, with rain predicted at some point today. Weather here is really unpredictable. One moment it's clear, and in the next ten minutes, you might even see the heavens open up. Let's hope that we get an uninterrupted day of cricket.
Resistance in mind - Sri Lanka have done well, but only in patches, and are yet to put together a complete team performance across this Test. Chasing a mammoth total, they were reduced to 47/4 on a pitch that hasn't exactly turned into a minefield but is certainly wearing down progressively. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha, though, have formed a resilient stand to steady things for now. But with precious little batting left after this pair, and conditions only expected to get tougher from here, the hosts know this partnership needs to bat deep into the day if they are to save this Test. And for that, surviving the first session without much damage will be a really big challenge for the hosts. With crucial WTC points up for grabs, India, who are fifth on the table currently, will aim to get the job done without any hiccups. Stay tuned as the first ball of the final day isn't far away.
On the victory path - India made the toss count in a big way, cashing in to post 462 on a pitch that's only grown harder to bat on with each passing innings, with scores dropping off in descending order. Come the second innings, India found themselves in a spot of bother at 111/4, before Rishabh Pant stood tall. His adventurous half-century kept the visitors firmly on top. Along the way, he became the fastest batter to reach the landmark of 100 Test sixes. That batting effort has been backed up by an all-round bowling performance too, as Manav Suthar is calling the shots with six wickets and counting in this match.
Last day of action - After four absorbing days with a fair share of rainfall in Galle, it’s time for the final day of action in this first Test. The visitors have held the upper hand since the first innings and are on the verge of getting the lead in the series. The hosts, on the other hand, are way behind the eight ball and need something more than extraordinary to get themselves back into the game. Hello and welcome to our coverage of the fifth day of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India.
... DAY 5, SESSION 1 ...
All to play for - Sri Lanka might be in dire straits at the moment, but all is not lost. The pitch doesn't yet have any real demons in it and their skipper, Dhananjaya de Silva, is playing well. With the centurion from the first innings in the form of Sonal Dinusha at the other end, a strong first session on Day 5 could cause a momentum shift. Do join us at 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST) for the final day's action in this first Test match. Cheers!
Let's hear from India's rising spinner - Manav Suthar says it feels good to be playing Test cricket, something every cricketer dreams of. Feels that getting a wicket with the first ball in the first innings helped him settle in. Shares that he practices spot bowling to find his rhythm leading up to games. Speaks about learning from senior spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Feels there was more turn in the second innings and expects the surface could offer more tomorrow. Feels getting the lengths right at the start of the day tomorrow and adapting to the conditions will be crucial.
Wickets galore - There was a lot of action on Day 4, as we had as many as 14 wickets fall in the day that was also marred by some rain. At the end of it all, India are the front runners for the win. Rishabh Pant was probably the best batter on Day 4, playing some eye-catching and attacking cricket, with Devdutt Padikkal also contributing to India's cause with the bat.
12.39 pm GMT (6.09 pm IST) - STUMPS, DAY 4 - The light has faded here in Galle. A long, long Day 4 comes to an end with Sri Lanka still needing 288 runs to win with 6 wickets in hand. India will feel they are in command, and if rain doesn't play spoilsport on Day 5, they will be in pole position for the win.

Manav Suthar To Lahiru Udara OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Manav Suthar breaks through. Lahiru Udara cannot believe it, but he has been given the marching orders by the third umpire. From around the wicket, on a length, around off. Udara has a slightly tentative prod at the ball. It spins away to catch the outside edge. It dips on Dhruv Jurel, who is in really tight at gully. He has the helmet on and is on his knees there. He gets his hands out in front to scoop the ball. The third umpire is summoned for a check. Jurel tries to get his hands underneath the ball, but the fingers of his right hand are split as it hits his hand. Replays seem to suggest that the ball drags slightly along the ground, but the third umpire feels otherwise and is satisfied that Jurel has his fingers underneath the ball. That's a debatable dismissal. Sri Lanka are 47/4, chasing 372.
Has that carried? Dhruv Jurel is claiming the catch. Only one angle is available for the catch, and after zooming in, the third umpire eventually concludes that Jurel has his fingers underneath the ball.

Prasidh Krishna To Lahiru Udara
A huge appeal for LBW. Prasidh Krishna is literally pleading with the umpire but Ahsan Raza is unmoved. Shubman Gill checks with the men behind the bat and they feel that there was an inside edge. Krishna follows the short ball with a fuller ball. Udara is caught on his crease as he tries to defend. Gets rapped on the front pad, and it looks pretty adjacent but the UltraEdge confirms that there was an inside edge.

DRAMA! Ravindra Jadeja has found the edge, and it is taken as well at slip, only for him to turn back and realise that he has overstepped. A massive reprieve for the Sri Lankan skipper. Sonal Dinusha, who is the next man in, had put his helmet on and was about to walk out. This straightens off the deck, on a good length. It is angled in at the stumps and Dhananjaya has to play it. He presents a straight bat, but the ball turns away enough to catch the outside edge, and it is snaffled by KL Rahul to his left, but it all goes in vain.

DRINKS BREAK! It's been all India so far in this final session on Day 4. Mohammed Siraj and Manav Suthar did well to get early wickets, and now Prasidh Krishna is in the middle of a sublime spell. Sri Lanka have yet again been let down by their top order, but Lahiru Udara is still fighting it out there. A lot depends on him and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva as they look to take the game deep for the hosts. India would love at least 2-3 more wickets before the end of play today, and there's pelntt of time left to do that.

A prolonged appeal for LBW, but the finger stays down. It seemed to be sliding down leg and the height seemed a factor as well but Shubman Gill wants to take a chance. Angled into the right-hander, on a good length, on middle and leg. Dhananjaya de Silva pushes out in front with a straight bat. The ball nips back to go past the inside edge and thuds into the front pad. There is no bat involved but the Ball Tracking has the ball clipping the leg outer half of the leg stump. Closer than it looked initially, but the on-field decision is upheld. India keep their review, though.

Manav Suthar To Pasindu Sooriyabandara OUT!
OUT! LBW! India successfully overturn the on-field decision. A huge, huge appeal, and Manav Suthar is literally begging the umpire to give it out, but he doesn't get the decision in his favour. This time Shubman Gill does review it after a bit of deliberation. Excellent length from Suthar, landing it on middle and the ball slides on with the arm. It is a nervy attempt at the block from Pasindu Sooriyabandara, but he misses and gets hit on the back leg. There's nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that the ball held its line, and it's three reds. A golden duck for the concussion sub.

The replays roll in and show that there is a direct hit at the keeper's end, but Pasindu Sooriyabandara is well in. A bit casual from him, though, not dragging the bat in and just jogging over the line.
Sri Lanka lose their first wicket. In walks Pasindu Sooriyabandara, the concussion substitute, who is making his Test debut. Sooriyabandara comes in with an impressive first-class record, having scored 23 fifties and 14 hundreds, with a highest score of 242. In case you missed it, Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the Test with a concussion. While trying to stop a boundary in India's second innings, he rolled over onto his head and appeared to have jarred his neck in the process.
